Why Savoy Can’t Stomp.
Every once in a while, a magazine comes along that breaks new ground. It finds a rhythm and connects with people beyond its core audience. It pushes the envelope of journalism and redefines what good editorial is all about. It presents a message that is strong, poignant, and becomes a powerful voice for a generation. Savoy is not that magazine.

Unsavory

Recently Newsweek trumped Savoy with its powerful cover of the triumvirate of Richard Parsons (AOL/TW), Kenneth Chenault (American Express), and Stanley O’Neal (Merrill Lynch) with the powerful tagline of “The New Black Power”. Indisputably the most important story in black journalism this month went completely unnoticed by Savoy, which is odd because Keith Clinkscales sits on the board of the Apollo with Dick Parsons and could have asked him at anytime to be on the cover of Savoy.

Instead Savoy oddly chose Tom Joyner for the cover in a mislaid attempt to attract a piece of his huge radio audience. Tom Joyner, although a hardworking fellow, was at the turn of the year, irrelevant. Sept 11, The War On Terrorism, Africa and the Middle East are subjects currently on people’s mind. Savoy has in the past has run covers not germaine to what was currently happening, such as one on Tiger Woods, who vociferously insists that he is not black, and Halle Berry, who sent a promotional picture in lieu of a photo shoot and interview. Even One World magazine has hot covers these days.

The magazine completely misses its intended black bourgeois audience. There are no articles on geo-political events, coverage of the African continent, the real black Hollywood power. There are no exposés of executive schisms at fortune 500 companies; there are no surprise exclusive interviews with President Mugabe, or anything remotely resembling journalism.

Roy S. Johnson, editor in chief, announced before the magazine launched that they would be committed to good journalism and not produce warmed over press releases that are the staple of most urban magazine outlets. We’ve seen harder investigative pieces in Ebony. The magazine has just become a shill for vacation spots.

Black Vanity Fair indeed.

Fantasy Island

Vangaurde’s mendacious boasting of a circulation of 300,000+ for the lagging title, which Audit Bureau of Circulation still has not certified, is comical at best, considering issues are gathering dust at newsstands across the country. The certification from ABC would guarantee normal advertising rates from major companies if they were above 250,000 units, however they are pushing back this certification for as long as possible because they have not hit these numbers as of yet.

Vanguarde has recently acquired Code magazine from Larry Flynt Publishing. They hope to change the format of Savoy to skew to older males and target Code magazine toward a younger audience. Vanguarde will come late to a crowded field of urban lad mags hoping for a taste of the success that Maxim, FHM, BlackMen, and the hot-to-death King, are experiencing. All indications though are that Code, under Keith Clinkscales, will be another scared rabbit publication that is afraid of the controversial and devoid of anything potentially fun. After all, the last time he gave a editor-in-chief full reign, he wound up offending the CEO of AOL/TW.

Keith is currently going door-to-door asking celebrities and affluent persons to personally invest in Vanguarde to keep the doors open. Most offers are being met with indifference. It’s a lot easier to raise money for a property that’s hot than one that is not on the radar of pop culture. As the ambassador for his company, Keith makes sure he keeps his brand alive by appearing at every event in NY. It’s been said Mr. Clinkscales would show up to a drink special at Perks if there was a photo-op involved.

It’s A Living.

Vanguarde’s Executive vice president Bo Kemp’s, lateral demotion to Circulation Manager comes just in time for this summer, because those cramped offices sure do get hot and someone had to fix the air conditioner. Bo Kemp was instrumental in securing early funding for Vanguarde, of which he subsequently blew millions on off the shelf software, botched web development contracts, and airplane tickets for staff to go to Urban Fashion shows like Magic. He still oversees their online operation, which allows him to pay for press releases about Vanguarde using third party CRM companies, links to travel sites, flash intros with hip hop beats, and calling Omar Wasow weekly to get blackplanet.com users to subscribe to Savoy.

Vanguarde has decided to make a living throwing parties. Its what they fundamentally do best. Their recent Star Studded event seems to have only one stud. The long list of luminaries included foundation covered Star Jones (who shows up to swoon over a Vanguarde exec she used to date), the well-preserved Cheryl Lee Ralph, and a guy we believe used to be a 3rd string bench warmer for the Knicks.

ahh, Nero too, fiddled whilst Rome burnt.

To me, Savoy represented the irrational overpriced market when everybody was rolling in dough from overflated dotcom stocks and when bougie Black folks got to visit and have photo-ops with Bill Clinton at the White House.

They need to adapt fast, the middle class blacks getting laid off left and right at these big corporations don't have the expendable funds like they used to..which was Savoy targeted audience

I was annoyed with Savoy when I read an article in Brill's Content with the publisher saying that Savoy was ONLY for upper middle-class blacks...that it was intended for the Martha's Vineyard types. Essentially, they're trying to be elitist...it seems like there is enough that divides black folks without having a siddity magazine too.

I went to the VMI site and I really didn't see anything wrong with posting their education with other highlights. However, if I were them, I wouldn't claim Vibe.com. Considering how big the magazine is, the web site is garbage... I read the magazine a couple of times and it was ok... I agree that that the first couple of issues didn't move me. I'm going to give them another year to get their feet under them before I pass judgement on it. If I were them, I wouldn't simply focus on the upper middle-class black community. That seems a little to narrow, but I know that advertisers want people who spend money and no other demographic spends more money than black folks with loot.

[*] This magazine has no audience.
There is no such thing as "upper class blacks". "Our Kind of People" were still pissing in the colored washroom, no matter how many millions they had. Unless they were light enough to pass.

The crabs are still in the proverbial barrel, because there is very little true power held within the community. There are, however, powerful consumers in the community and their dollars are shrinking as of late.

FEDS will last longer than Savoy because FEDS knows how to speak to their audience. Savoy knows there are people out there who aspire to be this currently non existent "upper class" but Savoy doesn't know who they are, where they are or what they're interested in.

Negro Pleez,

You hit the nail squarely on the head, the real black "upper class" bougie people Savoy targets are trying hard to live like the Kennedys or front like they are a bastard of Thomas Jefferson in Martha Vinyard.

I'm glad of the truth that many upper-class Blacks do stay or contribute back to the hood - most of you don't know about it because they don't floss like "Our Kind of People". And the truth that many of us sitting here are middle-upper class today but grew up in the projects eating syrup sandwiches for lunch.

With that said, Savoy was nothing but the tired-ass bougie propaganda piece by "Our Kind of People" that none of us (new money blacks) gives a fuck about anymore..

First thing...I do not work for Vanguarde but I believe that some of yall are true haters. This is the problem with BLACK FOLKS TODAY...whenever we see someone trying to do something we HATE. I have much respect for Keith, Bo, Roy, Len...Gary cause it is not easy running a magazine. Why do you think that so many start-up magazines come and go...those magazines most recent to the newstand are backed by some serious MONEY cause we all know white boys have it a lot easier. So here we have an educated group of black men who are trying to do their thing and compete with the big boys. The publishing business is no joke...take up circulation for about a month and you will understand what I mean...so for those of you that don't know you better go check it out and maybe you might have a bit more respect for what these brothers are trying to do.

The days of Ebony and JET are over...Mr. Johnson was the only player way, way, way, back in the day and the damn man had to start up his own damn companies just to get advertisers...so for all that vangarde has done and for all that they will continue (we hope) to do we should all stop hating and stand up and give thanks!

Shit...how many people work for Vanguarde...100...200...not sure but I know that they have given young African Americans work opportunities in an industry that is saturated with white folks. Look around at Primedia, Conde Nasty, Time Inc. , and Rodele. How many African Americans do you see really doing there thing over there.

The publishing industry is volatile and it is quite possible that Vanguarde might not last...Savoy may fold but the experience and opportunity that they have given to so many should be recognized.

If Savoy magazine is really in trouble maybe some of you "haters" should try to be more supportive of a group of black men trying to create jobs and opportunities and get a subscription, write to the editors and voice your opinions. Tell Roy and his staff what you think and give suggestions. Just don't sit back and laugh and say...those uppity niggas this and those uppity niggas that!

Black people this is our problem...we hate! Jealously is going to continue to be our demise if we don't get our shit together.

If some of you that have commented think that you can actually do better than go ahead and start your own damn publishing company!

One final comment...I remember when UBO crashed and burned and Keith was asked what he thought...he said something like..."it is sad for all of us...because when one black business fails we all fail"

The opportunities that UBO gave many African Americans, and Latinos was huge and it is a shame that it went down like that. I laughed too but that was just my ignorance. I really hope that Vanguarde sees longevity like Johnson's Publishing because if it fails we all fail.

Stop hating yall...come on!

I, as a consumer, am not at fault for the downfall of a business (Black business or not). Nor do I, as a consumer, take credit for its success. The blame/credit belongs to those that run the company.

They must create a product that competes in the marketplace, period. If it does, consumers will respond. If it does not, consumers will spend their money elsewhere.

To say Blacks are culturally obligated to spend on Black businesses is misguided.

What is a shame is that KC & The Gang have a chance to truly make a legacy to be the "Johnson Publications" of the 21st century. Yet his image is mired in "sexual innuendo" and photos of lavish parties as his only claim to fame. Though his recent visits to the DNC are helpful. Keep fundraising!

KC being an executive or CEO is very much like being a politician. Bring Gia out more and show the world your family values. Let people see the educated Harvard MBA not the other image that is so degrading.

I think Heart & Soul and Honey are great magazines. Great writing and very timely for African American women.

Vanguarde needs to succeed so that black writers, photographers, models, editors, celebrities, etc., have a venue or arena to tell their stories.

As for CODE - KC here is the formula.
1/2 cup Maxim
1/4 cup FHM
1/8 cup Time
1/8 cup GQ

Anniversary issue, the hottest "colored" women in the world.

You could disagree with my rating's but you must admit it would sell magazines.

But when you look around and you aren't doing things right, you have a chance to correct yourself. Above all things, no matter what you think of them personally. The magazine sucks right now. Whose fault that is depends on where you are sitting.

Most media consumers just don't buy a magazine if they aren't interested in it. That's how they vote on products. Savoy has no mechanism to reaching out to it's supporters and subscribers to find out what they think or what they want to see different.

They [readers] aren't going to write in long diatribes about how they should change this and that, and I doubt Savoy would print them. They aren't interested in giving people a voice. They are interested in being tastemakers and going to parties for free where they are the matrons of honor.

If you see a big wheel with a copy of subsciption to Savoy, best believe they ran into Keith recently. They only have a copy out of pity.

Shit, Star Jones is at every party they throw chasing gary and trying to hide her thighs when she sits down. She should be on a pullout centerfold as much as she supports that rag.

Haven't seen a Star Jones Feature yet. Oh yeah.. Tiger Woods is more important.

All these comments I made I think is fair and balanced but.. Keith.. where is my damn money!?!?! You are treating us writers like shit.. and bumping up hacks and half-secretaries to write for the magazine. You'll need us one day Keith. We will be there for you, and forgive your past unpaid invoices.

Gotdamn does everyone know all they do at Vanguarde Media apparently is party and bullshit? I mean damn....people come to their parties and they stand around, floss and two way each other. They'll front all up in Mr. Clinkscales face like they are supporting his shit. Ask those same people once the party is over if they actually own subcriptions to the magazines if they weren't getting them on the hookup from one of the boys at Vanguarde. Hell No.

And those of us who have shown pity on them and picked up a copy of any of the magazines, have only found the ridiculous rantings of underqualified, glorfied secretaries and other "assistants" writing in the rags, like they are Herbert and Safire on the Op-Ed pages of the New York Times. These same writers one step away from the intern spot, spend their nights at Joe's Pub, posing for pictures on The Crusade.net weekly and can't figure out why people don't think that HONEY is the John Blaze? John Blaze? Yes they are still using that term, along with "Special Delivery" "Fatty Girls" and several other tag lines that makes me think these partying, no working hacks are just watching episodes of 106 and Park to develop cover taglines.

Subpar work is subpar work whether your black, yellow, blue or green. For example with diabetes, breast cancer, obesity, and AIDS running rampant among African-American women, Especially women of color who are below the age of 40, the best tag they could come up with to run on the top cover of Heart and Soul last month is "Did you pay too much for your Weave?" Sister 2 Sister is even more insightful than that. When you hear about your colleagues in the industry still waiting on payment from Vanguarde Media for their work, People getting jerked on business deals with them and see the ENTIRE staff out partying to 3 in the morning at every event, its little question as to why Vanguarde Media is doing poorly.

Clinkscales is a smart guy and we probably all have his moves early on in this game to thank for a lot of us having jobs in the past and maybe even now, but his support staff is a joke. They have to be some of the most unprofessional people in this game. And when you're trying to run a business and your staff aint shit, you could be the most brilliant person in the world and your business isnt going to amount to shit. Keith C, needs to seriously contemplate ditching the dead weight. Which is sadly most of the staff.

I'm not one to see brothers and sisters out of work, but if you can't do your job you have to press on. They can't just expect us to accept anything just because they are black and we're black so that makes us immune to having good taste. Shit is shit.

What you don't get is the spirit of this site. What you see as destructive criticisms toward "urban" properties, I see as a constructive blueprint of ways not to fail in business. As savage as it may look, there are people on this site that are using these commentaries to create better experiences for the market in which they are trying to compete.

These users are adding value by pointing out the lack of value. We deserve better than what's being offered. Hence, the rants.

Those that find it useful will weed out the personal attacks and gossip and get the lesson.

I am SOOO SICK of hearing everyone complain about what Keith needs to do and what Keith needs to stop doing and what
Keith does in his spare time...

I mean does it really matter what he is doing in his personal life? I think not.

And while we are at it - does anyone remember the days of Volume.com? UBO? The Source and Vibe before they sold out?
Keith is a tremendously courageous business man. His job is to get funding, rally the troops and run the business.
and as someone who has worked with him he does his job well and that is how he came to be in this position. Roy is the Editor of Savoy - and the
problem lies within the content of the publications. But Roy left a rather high level position at Time to come run the magazines and I wonder what
kind of arrangement he made with Keith to maintain complete creative control of his baby Savoy. for all we know, Keith could be caught in a difficult
position with an Editor that will only do things the way he wants to do them. not to mention we have no idea what kinds of political and professional
ties may have been cut when Roy left Time. So stop blaming keith and all the guys at Vanguarde. Stop claiming they hang out and don't work - because
Keith is ALWAYS working.
I am quite sure that during the great economy of the late 90's and the heyday of Vibe, everyone was doing far more hanging out than they are now.

Has anyone been to Vanguarde lately? They work there asses off.

I suggest that all you naysayers, haters, gossips and wannabe ballers get a subscription to on eof the only

"prophet", grow up. Then shut the hell up. It's an absolute joke that you would post that we here commenting this story have some sort of "Mommy" responsibility to tell VMI what we would want to see in their magazines as if they would listen in the first place. People are telling them what the DON'T want to see which is why hardly anyone picks up a copy of Savoy or Honey for that matter.

In our circles, I'm sure each and everyone one of us have heard and (or experienced themselves) of professionals offering their time and talents to the so called executives at VMI only to be cast aside for a photo op in the society pages, a pretty girl who's only talent is to look good, squeezed in compensation, with them low-balling and not paying EVERYONE, or something else that does NOTHING to aide them increasing the bottom line but pads their egos. This hole they're in they dug it themselves, jumped in and are now covering themselves up in dirt. Keith Clinkscales may be hard working, and I doubt anyone here says he is not. But a General is only as good as his troops. He cannot be an effective CEO, cleaning up the fires of his "troops" who are either too incompetant or self centered to take pride in their positions and help the business grow, rather their own social standing.

If Roy Johnson reports to Keith Clinkscales, then it is up to Keith Clinkscales to set the mandate for all the properties, Including Johnson's brainchild Savoy, in which VMI now owns. It's never a good idea to bring someone on board to your company to do something as inportant as the "Editiorial Director" just because they have connections or political ties, only to have them fail at it miserably and then you can't get rid of him because you as a business person are afraid of the reprecussions in the industry that action may bring.

A captain has to sail the ship come hell or high water. If Vanguarde Media goes under, the finger won't be pointed at the various underlings and what fault they may have but at the CEO, who's primary goal is to bring people into the fold who CAN work well with others and are exceptional at their own jobs. His professional reputation is at stake and the finger is being pointed in his direction and rightly so because it is he who made the decision to bring these people on board. Perhaps these other "distractions" people are accusing him of is the reason why he can not see the problems in his company that are screaming loudly to everyone else. I certainly hope he does have the courage you speak of because he will have to make some MAJOR changes in his staff in order to survive. If the staffers at VMI are "working their asses off" now it's only to plug the huge holes in the ship they've made since the company's inception. And it may be too late. Even as I post this VMI staffers are working their asses off on the greens of the Doral Resort in Miami for yet another "event" Hard working, indeed.

Roy S. Johnson used to be at Sports Illustrated I Do Believe. So maybe that need to do a Savoy Swimsuit issue.

Oh Wait, they had a article in there about "We Stylin' in the NHL!" about black NHL hockey player! Roy S. Johnson going back to his roots to trying to do sports coverage.

[ note. King magazine had a vastly superior article with the cute non-sambo title of "All Iced Out" ]

"We Stylin' in the NHL!" - this is the best they could come up with? Un-fucking-real.

What's next Roy?

Images of Basketball players doing a Cake Walk?

A Syncopated Football Minstrel Show?

Jamaican BobSled Team With Steel Drums?

Hey!

If you check the newer issue the cover says:

"We Ask Our Corporate Negro! Hey Frank, Dick, Ken, Can I Get a Job?"

It's a one page article that is really wack. This is what they think of us.

Gavin went out of business it seems.. Impact stopped publishing. What next for radio Publications, especially since there is only two or three entities in radio that matter anymore. Too bad Vangaurde fucked Impact, they could have really taken over now that Gavin is gone.

I dont think that girl works for Jane who posted. Probably some Vangaurde chick head.

Dear Think About This:

Swallow that bullshit unity propaganda all you want. If negroes screw up, it's negroes who are gonna get screamed on. Just like you, they get what they give.

The whole VMI outfit are a bunch of psuedo bourgie phonies. They ain't no "Jack and Jill," million dollar bourgies (that's right, I ebonically used the double neg)! Ya been watching too many Fresh Prince reruns.

Savoy sucks period and if they were true to their audience and their culture, it wouldn't have to. And just because they hire some of their own, they didn't save the hood. The most talented of us work for whitey anyway and not by our own choices. I know a few heads who didn't work for them cuz they wouldn't put out (not to say those females at VMI did).

Gia needs to round up the others for a VMI Black Wives Club 'cause all them suckas is on the pussy hunt.

One World is corny. Always has been to me. The cover shots are good, got to give them that much. Bing, can you imagine all of the Vanguarde Media, Inc wives coming up to the offfices with screaming kids, rollers in their hair, and roller pins clenched in their fists, ready to wreck shop on any space filling "assistant" who's paid to, ahem, "service". You can always tell the ones who do the work over in the offices of VMI, they aren't going to be in the next Ja Rule/Irv Gotti joint. But they will be pulling up the slack for those who look like they would be.

I can only think of a population of 500 people that Savoy actually caters to..

What's that? About $2500 a month in subscription revenue?

Is there a tax incentive (like breakfast cereal) for printing up bullshit like this? Must be some kind of significant loss writeoff or something....

Okay, Honeybear, the Joi cover was kinda sexy. It's just that Gipp has a tighter perm than hers and I still have a problem with men who process their hair.

Word...they don't even know how to cater to this so called uppity class. But then again, they probably won't mix with VMI types unless their subscription was doing O numbers (and they don't even mix with Oprah...jealousy is so ugly).

Like anything Savoy has some good and some regrettable points about it. I've enjoyed their issues ( such as the hollywood and entertainment clout issue) that provide bios and beautiful portraits. They are concentrated motivational pages. However oversimplified articles and content which lacks depth is symptomatic of this sometimes anemic publication. I'm no representative of upper-middle class black people, but I appreciate intelligent, energetic, and thoughtful social commentary. I believe in potential and the fact that you can change history everyday. Savoy has great potential to be a great publication regardless of it's target market. The approach is simple: Focus on being a great magazine flavored by black culture, not just a black men's magazine.

Take it for what it's worth.

I read every thing posted re: Vangarde/K.Clinkscales/R.Johnson,and it troubles me.
The mere fact that Impact! is gone...
I feel so betrayed. I attended Super Summit XIV and I was so impressed, the contacts, the quality of the panels, the beauty of The Opryland Hotel...
It's just a damn shame y'know. I thought those brothers had it together. I had hoped that some day I would take my Music to the Super Summit and it would mean something. It seems like just another big let down.
I don't get it. I'm no Magazine "Industry Head," but slowly, I'm begining to understand ya'll beef.
I came to this site looking for a link to the Impact! website, and I find you angry sumumabitches...Shit...I feel like that niggah that went to Wendy's and found a fuckin' rat in his shake.
How could these idot muthafuckas kill a publication that had so much potential and better still, WORTH, to Music Industry "outsiders" who are struggling to find a "window of opportunity" and a desperately needed way in?

I'm an urban consumer.
Last month I picked up a copy of Savoy magazine just because Beyonce and Cuba Gooding were on the cover. I knew they're novie was coming out, and wanted to read from an urban magazine about how ridiculous the film/duo looked. Foremost, I'd like to thank God for giving me the common sense to NOT purchase that mess of a magazine! I could not believe the article that was written about the new Black "actors" (Beyonce and Cuba Gooding Jr.)! The writer didn't even bother trying to be discret about his or her admiration for the two; he or she spent the entire 2-3 page spread praising the duo as the new contemporary Black actors in Hollywood. The writer didn't bother to critic the movie or the duos (lack of) acting skills/credibility. What I couldn't believe was how the writer had the nerve to lend his or her name to that piece of literary fluff. To make their (referring to Savoy magazine) point even clearer about their downright infatuation with the duo, the magazine contained an almost 5 page photo spread of Cuba and Beyonce in memorable poses from classic cinema. The magazine continued to go downhill from that episode. The articles were all meant for the Black burgeoise, but I couldn't imagine a true member of the Black burgeoise reading that bullshit. Savoy magazine is basically what the Black masses don't need: A conservative mag filled with cliches about wealth (and the losers who claim they have it).

AFRICAN BY NATURE

I read the November 2003 article that interviewed Halle Berry.

The interviewer from this magazine referred to people that would question her roles in some of her movies as the "Uptight Negro Coalition." When in reality the true so-called negroes would be people that would find nothing wrong with much of anything. As long as the white man liked it, they could "win" a prize and make a lot of money, nothing else matters.

This is why I would never pay for this magazine. It really wasn't made for progressive African Americans. It was made for white people, disguised as a magazine for us.

Please someone, have them stop sending me these magazines. I have never asked for them, but they have been sending them for years now. I subscribed to Emerge magazine not this one.

This is just another high gloss bad magazine like Ebony and Jet, but worse!

Who can I send my address, to have these magazines stopped right away?

Be easy on me if I'm wrong. I'm Aussie, but...

What the fuck!? What America, Australia (We have some of the same problems) and the world needs is not a 'black bourgeois' magazine. Who was it that said 'The revolution will not be telavised'? It also will never be circulated to middle class black Americans in some stupid mag. Someone needs to go back to the drawing board. If there is no revolution, how will there be any 'black bourgeois' at all? Why don't all these people with more cash than brains buy TheSource, kick out all the dead wood, put some real people in positions of power, and make that mag great? You want a revolution? No revolution and no power has ever been taken by the middle class on behalf of the peasants. The peasants took it by themselves, for themselves.

P.S. How does this clout system work. I'm new here.
