Is the Source Brand No Longer In Demand?
|
 |
TheSource threw a party this past weekend for All-Star weekend in a venue that could hold 3000 people at $60 a pop. The only problem is only 100 people showed up, and they all got in for free. TheSource has recently put up a for sale sign just as the empire seems to be slowly fraying at the ends.
One of the problems with TheSource brand was highlighted recently when the magazine featured a music artist on the cover that they had promoted over the years with full-page ads and 5 microphone ratings for their product. The artist still has not been able to go gold. If TheSource can’t guarantee an artist gold status with full-page ads, great ratings, air-time on the TV show and a cover, majors and independents have to begin to question whether their ad dollars are bringing a quantifiable result from being placed in the magazine.
TheSource tried to maintain a web presence to justify the complete media entertainment giant. After spending cash on an assortment of web development companies and consultants whose track record was conspicuously devoid of ever developing a successful content web site, TheSource.com launched without much fanfare. The site consisted of tiny video clips of soft ball interviews with hip-hop artists that you could easily see a myriad of other places, ungainly flash animations, and lots of features that were underdeveloped or complete non-existent. The executive staff current interest lies more with the TV show, so the plug was pulled on the website. TheSource is currently are developing a new site with Canadian based Boom Digital, and leveraging the costs and risks of running the site with them.

Has anyone read Black Man - the magazine for strong, positive, caring brothers? |
the low attendance at that party has nothing to do with anything. you're reaching. it doesn't speak to the strength of the source brand name. it may speak to the weakness of promotion of that event, and that's it. cite circ figures and ad $s if you wanna go that route. |

TheSource is looking for $10 million for the whole company.
Keith Clinkscales wants to find investors that will give him the money to take that over so that he can be in the lime again with a hip-hop magazine and a TV show
(Re- Blaze and VIBE TV)
Maybe he can get Jesse Washington to run it! He ain't doing shit!
Run Jesse Run!

THAT MAGAZINE IS GHETTO TRASH.......... |
Didn't they cancel one of the shows in the NY Market?
I know the one with the porno dud Treach is still on. |
I started reading The Source in 1990. Boy how things have changed since then. At one time it was a really good magazine that was actually informative when it came to good music. During the mid-90's it started to slip and by the end of the Millenium it was pretty much unreadable. I haven't bought an issue in well over a year and I know I'm not missing anything. |
I got into the magazine for a minute but I was never high on their mic system. The web site was one of the worst sites online. You'd think for the amount of money they make, they could've made something better. Hopefully, they turn things around. |
don't be scared to say it was Ray Benzino aka Ray Dog aka The Wackest Rapper To Get On The Cover Of The Source....
dave mays the white boy has to do what ol' benzino says since dave had no idea about hip-hop when he started the mag in 88... he was just another rich kid at harvard trying to rebel against his parents and hang out with the blacks... benzino being the wise business man that he is decided to partner up with "this white boy from harvard trying to front in the ghetto"... they gave him a 40, a coke blunt, and let him squeeze the ass of the local chicken... he was hooked... and benzo now lives in a house with an inground pool... 5 cars...
so he financed the mag... they authorized the content and kept davey boy's extra cash occupied...
benzino was also allowed to beat up staff members for writting a bad review of his wack rap group The Almighty RSO...
also... rumor has it that in the beginning dave used to get smacked up by ray benzino's boys... until he finally had the nerve to ask not to be extorted in public... |
and the only reason why the source is the number 1 urban mag is the same reason why jay is the number one mtv boy toy... there aint nothing else.
dave's days are numbered!
|
if you have enough money you can make it to the cover of the source... it's all about the doe! |
I stopped reading the source once I realized that big artists rarely received bad reviews unless they were birds in cages, i.e. wouldn't hurt their bottom line. They pick on certain artists and its sad. I stopped reading Vibe too for the same reason. By the way has anyone noticed what a POS King magazine is? The thing I like about Maxim are the very good, and often very informative, center piece stories about crimes and other subjects. That's non exisistant in King. I'd rather just go to the club if I want to see some bare ass. |
call it what u want... but UE hit the nail on da head with the comments about benzino. seriously, they gave rso/made man every chance to succeed -- nominated for SOURCE AWARDS, 4.5 mics (not 5 as it says in the article), free advertising, multiple BS articles about how tough they had it coming up in boston and how real they are and now the killer -- A COVER for BENZINO! that sucked. guess what? shit still doesnt sell and the music is still just that -- honestly -- SHIT. hahaha |
The source liekt he current state of HIp-Hop..SUCKS...The source is not even trying to make the magazine an intellegent MAG. Far as I'm concerned...If they get cancelled it's their own fault.
I hope the Source folks are reading this... |
Has any one here caught a copy of Gutter Magazine? |
The very second that they decided to put Benzino on the cover, they were OVER! Nobody with anything close to common sense would purchase this guy's music, because to put it midly,HE SUCKS ASS! yOU CAN'T FIND 5 PEOPLE WHO EVEN KNOW WHO THIS FOOL IS,YET THESE IDIOTS PUT HIS NO TALENT ASS ON THE COVER? Th e article that GQ ran on them did'nt do them any favor either ,as it took what was known in the hood and put out on full blast for the mainstream to see,The Source is a JOKE! RIP ya half-ass hacks! |
Ray Benzino needs to stop making The Source a personal platform for himself and his group. Made Men could get get all the artists that have gone platinum and still not go gold. When they were the Almighty RSO they had one big song at least in my homestate in Hawaii. Maybe he should just go independent and if he sells 80,000 he will be considered ghetto gold. The Magazine is not a pedistol but a platform for the art of hip hop. Lets leave it that way |
It's not even about putting Benzino on the cover. It about TheSource dickriding certain artists and members in the industry. As they were all on everyone from the east and some in the south, they were ignoring other artists and showing them no luv.
Even though they did give MadeMen 3 page ads in EVERY ISSUE, they neve made any real moves in the industry. Most people don't even know who they are. The point is The Source doesn't get hiphop the way they used to. It's all about the money like said before, and now that they took back their mic ratings to go along with what other people were saying, that shows there, they ain't shit. |
This magazine has always been just a newsletter for Dave Mays to show off in front of his conservative family and friends. HE never took hip hop seriously until a couple of kids started buying the mag and 'other financial oppurtunities' popped up. This was just a way for a Harvard educated white cat to make some waves in his inner circle. In a way it'll be a sad day to see the Source go, unless 'the brothers' pony up about 10 mil and purchase it, then actually making the correct changes to make that rag a respected and revered hip hop publication.

the source be spellin shit wrong and all they do is gossip. a sorry ass for a magazine. |
first of all, lets talk intelligence, no magazine is going to make you "go gold"...talk straight! because you can afford to pay for advertising in a magazine, doesnt guarantee you will appeal to its core audience, ALL it guarantees is a spot next to other people that can afford it just like you! the key to selling anything at all is how we market, relate, and connect to our proposed target markets. i have found that too many so called ceo and executive types, after wasting "assumably valuable" thousands of dollars in popular tissue mags, find out that they had their dicks in their mouths...just like those djs on commercial radio and almost every single a&r ive ever met!
if you feel the vibe check out the remedy radio show, 100% pure...what does that mean? log on and find out!!!

I lost interest in "The Sauce" long time ago. The magazine is a waste of time; the writers should be embarrassed to even include their names at the end of each article. On top of that, wack-ass Benzino basically holds the magazine hostage what with his tirade mention and portrayal of his group, Made Men and himself. Furthermore, the 5 Mic ratings is a joke! Here's the true deal: if u don't ride Benzino's shtick you won't get a decent rating! The supremacy this mag use to have has vanished and all that's left in readers' mouths are an awful aftertaste. |
"Its all about the ads now" articles on the real artist are no longer present |
