Darien Dash: Race for Cash

Darien is preparing to launch "Places of Color". Sounds more like a smarmy romance novel by Terry McMillan than a co-branded ISP play involving AOL. The site currently consists of the ubiquitous Flash intro -straight from a Macromedia tutorial- and a grating sound track guiding us through uninspired visuals. The press for this deal sounds great: AOL working with a company called Digital Mafia, to bring poor black people Internet service at $19.95 when many ISPs are giving away service for free!
Why did AOL do this deal thru its stepchild CompuServe division? CompuServe builds the co-branded ISP's with partner companies to avoid diluting the main AOL 5.0 brand. Then, through the fine print of the deal, they aggressively cannibalize users from those co-branded deals by marketing AOL 5.0 to them though various sized banner ads. The companies in the co-branded deal are stuck with all the marketing costs of the venture including the cost of pressing the CD's for access to the service for an infrastructure that AOL already has in place.
With the stock price in the toilet; hovering around $1, DME is listed on the OTB. Ooops, I mean the OTC Bulletin Board. That's over the counter stocks, whose prices are updated by an old man on a huge chalkboard in a smoke-filled backroom. AOL picked up 1,250,000 of these on the cheap for a "minority investment" in DME. We picked up a few at our local Optimo.
Like the Sporty Theive$ say, "Game is something we got a lot of," and Darien is the ultimate PR man. He portrays his company as a cutting edge development firm, when in truth, he hasn't been able to keep one major client. He doesn't even have the contract for his brother's company Roc-A-Fella Records. Digital Mafia's fine work can be seen in such sites as HBO home Video (http://www.hbohomevideo.com). The list of clients Darien has lost over the years is quite impressive: Bad Boy Entertainment, MSBET, HBO, Motown, LaFace, and Stress Magazine (not that they had any money anyway). Hopefully, he can keep things afloat with funds from Roc-A-Blok records. I'm sure a "Ski" album is just what everyone is waiting for.
Darien is a well-meaning man, but he runs his new media company like a record label. Delaying web sites like album releases. Yelling at employees like herbs for making mistakes. Charming all the female employees while minimizing their actual authority. Not paying employees for their work. Cock-blocking male employees and overriding their authority. (Exit: Mark Ferguson, president, who just wanted to run a tight ship and actually make money). Looks like Darien graduated from Puff Daddy's School Of Management.
One mitigating factor is that he still has his sister Stacy Dash's website, and people will take meetings with him in hopes that they might score with her.

Money has always been made on the backs of those the psuedo-aristocracy claim to support. Mr. Dash would be better served to educate his people on of the power of the Internet as opposed to selling it to them. And why is it that UBO needs so many employees to produce that garbage? When since reports on Marie Claire and Prada considered responsible reporting on urban news? An Open Letter to Mr. Dash,
Dear Mr. Dash,
I had a lot of respect for you until that deal you struck with AOL. You've created a crime far worst then anything I've ever seen against the online "urban" market. The thought that you would team up with the prick at AOL, steve case, to offer affordable ISP at 19.95 to a consumer base that's in desperate need of getting on-line.
What you need to do, is use that cash flow from AOL and launch a campaign that would educate folks on how to hook-up with one of those free services.
I for one will do everything in my power to expose this bullshit "A Place of Color" for what it is -- A front for AOL.
