360 AKA Adam Kidron and UBO

Leave it to AKA, UBO and 360hiphop to take 'co-opetition' to a new level and create one of the most convoluted and meaningless pseudo-partnerships online. Urban Exposé has unraveled a web, which begins with Russell Simmons and the failed One World magazine.
It's come to our attention that One World magazine was purchased by UBO via financing from Flatiron partners. Why anyone would want to own a failing magazine, even for the subscriber list, is beyond us. It seems fairly clear that Russell Simmons simply had his buddy George Jackson bail him out using Flatirons money. Just your everyday hook-up from one music mogul to another. As if that isn't strange enough, it also appears that the One World TV show, also owned by Russell Simmons, is affiliated with AKA, the online music network owned by sub-urban hip-hop profiteers behind Loud Records. However, the madness doesn't stop there, former rap magazine marketing reps, who can barely use email, are now posing as online marketing gurus at UBO. It seems that these geniuses have decided to spend some of UBO's $50+ million in VC to buy the ad inventory of AKA.
Again, why buy the ad inventory of a site like AKA, for which the most aggressive estimates indicate only a minimal amount of traffic? Less then .01% of Internet users visit AKA, according to one measurement. That is a meager 90 thousand visits per month. We think that most of these visitors were actually looking for the website of black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.
It's also interesting to note that Russell Simmons who owns the One World properties hasn't bothered to use them in his 360hiphop venture. Instead he has chosen to pawn them off on his competitors. The directors of these sites must learn that flash intros and recycled interviews with LL Cool J or Lil' Kim won't make their sites any more compelling.

By the time I jump to a site (if ever), I'll know what the hell I'm doing.

I hear you Miss Bee..I started to jump on the bandwagon and check out a few of these urban sites for available positions, but imma sit back, observe a lil while longer- and stick with traditional print media, and agencies likeTBWA Chiat/Day..i'd freelance for them "urban" cats tho'.
The whole .com biz is so new ...nobody really knows what thier doing, especially when it comes to targeting an "urban" audience.
Toss around a few nonsensical digital terms, pretend to be internet savy and any media mongul with a rep can drum up funding and support for a new online venture.
Blow half of the money throwing launch parties every week, and overpay cats...if the venture fails-maybe investors can claim it a tax write-off...no one really loses in the end except the consumer/online surfer who actually thought the site and the people running it were sincere about catering to them....but there not really imortant..
..or are they?

if you want to see compelling content you need to check out the video features on onelevel.com. the fact that urban sites have allocated their funds improperly is old news. onelevel is run by kids half the age of execs at the other sites and we have built something bigger with 1/50 of the funding. as far as my partner richard being inexperienced, incompetent, and overpayed i'll tell you this: he's defintely inexperienced as am i you old ass motherfuckers; incompetent doesn't really come into play; and as far as being overpayed goes, you have no idea how misinformed you are (you guys can do better than that).

Fact of the matter is that John Passmore owned the rights to Oneworld magazine and obviously bought the internet rights as well. He leveraged this to get in good with George Jackson at UBO and that's that. Russell didn't really have much to do with the deal. John is a smart business man who knows his rights and takes advantage of a good situation. |

What measurement are you basing AKA's traffic on? You are off by millions... The ad space UBO bought from us includes all of our affiliate sites (which number around 500), so to understand the value of the UBO/AKA deal, you have to figure in the traffic of all these sites.
And like concerned said, Russell Simmons licenses his name to OneWorld but it is owned by Warner Brothers. So trying to tie 360HipHop to the UBO/AKA deal or the UBO/OMBTV deal is ridiculous... You guys are really funny but you're wrong a lot of the time. |
What we need to realize is that right now in the urban internet world there is no competition. There are no proven formulas. It's going to be years before we can do it. We need to just keep doing what we are doing and create the "space". At the end of the day all that matters really is that you get the check that you want. |

While I realize that aka.com's total traffic (including affiliates) must be greater than the 90,000 stated in the article, is it possible the home page only gets that much traffic? I doubt it, but a lot of people might cut out the middle man (aka) after a while and just go straight to those affilates that are providing the content they like. As long as you keep your facts straight, urbanexpose's got a lot of potential. Kind of like an inside.com for urban sites. But if any of this stuff proves to be inaccurate, you might lose your credibility (and audience) real quick. |

But i deagree that its a bad thing that AKA, UBO and 360hiophop are merging, I think this is the best thing that these sites can do. fyi aka has one of the most exploitative "affiliate" agreements in entertainment--and that's saying a WHOLE lot. When you're an aka "affiliate" they basically get complete access to all the content on your site--to use however they want--in ads, tv, etc etc etc. Anyone who would become an affiliate is either a moron or has some other deal goin with them. Just write then and ask to see their affiliate contract. For a bunch of white boys running a site profiting from Black music--well this is just another flava of slavery. AKA tried and threw up a few snipes and ads featuring the Loud roster- Not impressive.
UBO has the most ghettocorny print ads (where they done in the mid 1980's?). Hookt keeps running the same ad with the stickered-up computer.

AKA, 360, Hookt, Volume, Y2G, all of them, they have clear goals of showing the world their definition of what hiphop is. They also have a clear audience in mind: African-American, Latinos, and anyone else into hiphop.
UBO is a network of sites. Each with different goals, content, target audiences, music genres, etc. I'm sure UBO is not going to give any excuses for accomplishing what it's done through its various methods, however it's not at all competiting, or hating on, the other urban sites.
(anyone with any business plan analytical skills can see that).
Rather than make silly accusations, predictions, or just plain feeling bad 'cause you got jerked over from whatever cushy gig you had with anyone related to UBO (or any other company, for that matter,) realize just one thing:
life is not fair, get used to it.
and for those of you wise enough to read for pleasure, rather than using this site for your source of "precise information", have fun... the gossip here is interesting, but don't let it "hurt your feelings"

I'm not sure about the TV show, but One World Magazine was definitely owned, or at least fronted by, John Pasmore. Come on think about it, why wouldn't Russ put money into that venture? He put Def Jam money into Phat Farm, for sure. He would know that to make money, you have to spend money. Oneworld Magazine was not spending any money to build a record of success.
Just wanted to set the record straight. And I am sure that John Pasmore was also beind the TV show, because when Oneworld's properties were bought, he got a job at UBO.
Another piece of information for the record. The 360 site does not use Oneworld or is no longer called RS1W, because it has nothing to do with Oneworld.
Unless, as you are suggesting, all of these sites are connected, in some form or fashion, under the table.

If you think 360, AKA, and any other site backed by major investors is out to redefine hip-hop in their image, your fooling yourself. Half the
investors for those companies aren't part of any hip-hop community, the record industry, or even interested. A lot of investors want to make a
profit.
What is happening with web companies is the same thing that happened
with hip-hop music in late 80's. Once hip-hop became profitable and marketable big companies pick it up and marginalize it, box and ship it. Site's like AKA create the illusion of community and public interest. Underlining all of that is a need to make money. Not just enough and not for the love of
the music.
Chris Green is an employee at AKA who happens to feel very strongly about the music and the culture. It is sad that so much of his efforts to keep AKA honest will go unnoticed or unneeded. His convictions, as with I think a lot of employees are honest, but they often fall on deaf ears.
In response to the potential of AKA, 360, and UBO becoming one and competing with the likes of MSN, AOL, and other top 500 sites, I think it is a joke. These companies won't be able to compete with AOl or any other mainstream culture site until Hip-Hop gets the endorsement of the conservative majority in this country or until the majority changes.
Is that what we want? Do you want stock quotes and news headlines from across the countries Diaspora? Hip-Hop culture seems to have developed mostly as a reaction against popular white government, media, and
entertainment. And a celebration of a different history and mentality. Are you willing to create a new culture that doesn't celebrate the self destructive nature inherent in popular American culture
today? O nthe web? Can you bring that mentality to fruition?
Are you willing to focus on the people and the culture and not just the check? To marketer and Miss Bee... I feel for you. You are engaged in one
of the most destructive industries in this country. You maintain the illusions of materialism and the mentality that money = wealth. That objects can = intangible desires. That a car = success = happiness. This
is the same industry that takes a hip-hop group solidifies an identity that will sell and then profits off of maintaining the groups destructive identity and in turn maintaining negative associations with minorities.
