Scott Mills and BET.com Throws Away Winning Hand

Scott Mills has been so busy running around the country promoting the idea of a digital divide that he allowed BET.com to divide itself from its premier investor, Microsoft. Who wants to sponsor a bunch of bitter women at BET.com whose idea of content is making personal attacks on Kobe Bryant for his taste in women?
Microsoft is ready to move on and they are not happy with BET.com. BET.com has responded by privately having talks with a number of companies about possible partnership opportunities. Will there be any takers? The early word from the top three potential partners, AOL, Yahoo and AT&T, has been no. Is it the lack of innovation? Is it the lack of vision? Or the lack of true technology savvy that forces a venture like BET.com squander the opportunity present with a partner like Microsoft?
This is of course not their first time wasting an opportunity with the worlds largest software company. They first embarrassed truly web-savvy African-American Internet users with their failed MSBET venture way back in 1997. Haven't we suffered enough of the low brow content of BET on cable, do we now have to endure the Johnson media formula of cheap, low quality and repetitive content on the Internet as well?
One mitigating factor is that now Chris Spencer has an exit strategy. When he is fired from temporarily hosting Live From L.A. (and he will be), he can go be a greeter on Robert Johnson's new airline. We can't wait for Chris to get us coffee!

Cut to the chase. BET as a channel is wack. According to it's programming all niggas do is watch videos. How many video shows can you have? and how many of them play Thong Song or Say My Name.
The whole campaign "Where We Web" is crap. The last time I checked niggas was at BlackPlanet.com. "We" ain't webbing at BET. And the "sexy" ads just show that BET doesn't have a clue about it's audience. |

i think that the notion that "niggas" can be acurately pegged into any specific demographic that could be acurately marketed to is a bigger myth than even the typical marketing myths that media hustlers try to sell. I am black but I almost never watch BET. Why? No sports, no international or financial news worth talking about and a glut of low-rent BS that serves to kill time only if you aren't fortunate enough to have HBO. BET doesn't lack the resources so much as an accurate direction to leverage those resources. |

I dont particulary care for BET like many others..no, actually I hate it.. but i figga' it has to be a difficult task to create programming that appeals to the entire african american audience...sumbodys interest and interpetation of "black enetertainment" is gonna be left out.. |
I agree with ohsocool, I think the point that I was making was more in line with the notion of higher quality programming.
Yes, they do cover news but without the depth associated with more "established mainstream" media houses. Why is that?
It's not because they are black. It's not because they don't have adequate resources.
Perhaps it is the will that is lacking. Perhaps it is the foresight and vision.
I think that every person with claim to any African ancestry at all would be interested in more in-depth reporting on the financial/social/cultural crisis in Africa right now. From Ethiopia to South Africa to Mazambique to Libya the African continent is in chaos and disrepair, was and plague. these are situations that are far removed from us here in the US but sooner or later, they will impact the entire world.
Who knew that Col. Muammar Khadafy suggested a Pan-African political summit in the hope of acheiving a common African economic community (ala the EC). This is major news that wasn't even mentioned in the mainstream press in the US (I read it on http://news.bbc.co.uk).
Why wasn't BET on top of that? Too many thong videos...
Perhaps it is perceived that their demographic isn't interested in news like that (as opposed to being very interested in thong videos) but it is the responsibility of the news media to inform and educate is it not?
I have no strong opinions on BET's programming one way or the other. I don't hate it. The thing is that it hasn't presented me with anything yet so far to inspire a reaction one way or the other. For a brand and lable with such weight (which BET does have; it's been around for years), I just think that they could do more to leverage that weight in pursuit of higher quality programming both online and braodcast.

Unfortunately, the only responsibility any 21st century media company feels is to hypnotize, satiate, and count the cash in the coffers. Besides, it's not Black News Television, they're focussed on entertainment, and therefore (sadly) on thongs.
(BTW: A Pan-African Union is probably impossible at this time (not that Khadafy would be the right fellow to create one anyhow). Western Europe has enjoyed relative peace for about 50 years while African nations are entrenched in civil and border wars throughout the continent. And those Europeans had no easy time of getting anyone to agree!)

BET reminds me of Ebony.. too mainstream and watered down for my tastes to watch on a semi consistant basis, but satisfactory for many who live a lifestyle different than mine.
Yeah...they have the potential to do somthing greater..but one thing BET & Ebony seem to have is a strong loyal consistant following.
Those of us interested in topics a lil more deeper than the top 100 Bligible bachelor's /Bachelorette's, or looking to watch a video by a UK artist like Omar are small in comparison to the "norm".....
We exist, but hav to wobble-wobble a lil harder, and bling-bling a lil brighter to be seen and heard through the crowds of thugs and thongs....if BET wont step up and listen or take notice, perhaps another visionary will..

I suppose you are right ultimately in the mission of media companies and the truth of the matter is that I bet thong videos do attract more viewers than reports on the further disintegration of the African continent. that's sorta depressing though...
Regarding pan-african unity, you are also right that Muammar is probably not the best man for that job as well as in calling attention to the general chaos and lack of a conducive environment to economic unity in Africa.
I guess my point there was that (in typical western imperialist fashion) these issues should almost certainly capture the interest of African Americans, if only because of the unexploited economic opportunities that Africa represents. Why don't African Americans with the means take an interest in the economic development of the African continent? Partly, this is due to the lack of perspective. For myself, I would love a news offering that focused on Africa and it's development.
ohsokool, I hear what you are saying but to quote you directly:

...and those followings are assets to be leveraged and so far, noone at Ebony or BET has attempted to exploit that angle which is sort of a drag considering what they COULD do with it if they had the cajones.

Whats the quickest easiest surefire way for a company thats in the biz of making money, to capture a substanstial share of a particular market or consumer(s) ?
Aim for the middle ground....its easy.
Its too hard for BET or Ebony to swing too many degrees "left", or a few steps to the "underground" or to even be "conscience"
Its..well......to risky..too much money at stake...to many investors and advertisers with hands in the pot, looking to increase and keep the steady flow of cream consistant.
Also, BET (and Ebony) had a particular vison when in there infancy and seem to be pretty much happy with thier viewer/readership....why risk change?...they dont have an obligation to me, nor do I have any obligation to watch them...

From power plants to undersea fiber optic cables, Africa will come together eventually. Would like to hook myself up someday on the beach in Ghana. Yeah, that'd be reeeeaaal nice...
But that has nothing to do with African Americans investing in Africa. That's like folks in Minnesota investing in Scandanavian companies - there's no direct connection at all. Many major investment companies have funds that target Africa across a few sectors. The problem with investing in Africa (and I admittedly know very little about this), is that the governments are so corrupt and unstable that it is difficult to conduct smooth business.

I don't think that BET can really compete with the funky fresh stuff we are creating at my company. My boss is the biggest star in rap, and he's bigger than Puff Daddy. He is the man, and his site will be selling his great clothing line Phat Farm. We have a "dream team" that will be blazing for the white audience in smaller towns that really liked "Walk This Way." I certainly hope that the "kris" from 360 was indeed and impostor. if not, let me add some needed intelligence to this board. while i have both personal and professional relationships with the folks at 360, and have the ultimate respect for their team, i don't think all the posturing and bragging is cool. let your site speak for itself. we know who you are. i've worked for russell, and i'm glad i did. i saw a black man create history and do it on his own terms. promoting this kind of competition is ridiculous. there are 20 million black folks in this country, 200 million total. i think there are enough people for both of us. the key things that this bulletin board should be discussing are the acquistions and mergers sure to go take place over the next year, and who it might make the most sense to join instead of compete with. what's going on with the stock market right now and the valuation of internet companies is infinitely more important to anyone holding stock options than anything previously discussed on this board.
we have a forum thankfully provided by the mysteriously anonymous backers of this site. so let's use this power for good, not for evil.

Ok, allow someone who knows the web business from way back to educate some of you. Although it sucks, and the staff is full of people that could never get hired elsewhere (a la nitro, dream hampton, etc.) UBO will win because it's owned by white men. If you don't know this, do your research. Why is their race important? As The Source proved, any white man can enter the black man's game and beat him because black people hate on black peole more than anyone else.
Russell will Sell 360hiphop to some white company like he did defjam, because he's only a hustler and you shouldn't expect more from him. Selwyn will eventually be fired or quit because, although he's a nice guy, he just doesn't have any backbone, and Russell runs right over people like that. Kris Ex is not even talented enough or experienced enough to be relevant. Sheena will do what she has to do to feed her kids.
Hookt will fail, or be acquired. Bet.com (as much as you may hate it) isn't going anywhere. The owner has the blessing of the white man (exp. the head of Bet was recently given, at cheap price, an entire airline.) That's their boy (as in stepandfetchit).
Volume is a Time Warner property, so it will most likely be dissolved at some point. Time Warner has never committed any serious resources to the black market. They won't start now just because the Hot Boys' hoopin' and hollerin' is selling millions.
TheSource.com will be folded into a major media entity like TimeWarner or Fox because dave mays has never believed in the internet and wants someone else to pay for his entry. Therefore, The Source will probably secure the number one or two spot. Also, the company is now wholely owned by a white jewish man. They will not let him fail.
Aka.com is a hustle, so it will fold quietly, or be folded into another company. Sony has not shown a serious committment to the project.
platform.net will be acquired. soon.
y2g.com. Well, since Fubu is actually owned by a consortium of korean and jewish business men, expect y2g to be around for a while in one form or another. Most likely as a pure ecommerce play designed to exploit the Fubu brand.
john shector & stretch armstrong's rapnetwork.com is too little too late. But, because they are both young white jewish guys, don't bet completely against them. Some old jewish money might decide to make their project legit.
Bottom line? This entire discusssion on this site is largely irrelevant, because in the end, the white man will own the leading online black portal. So stop pretending as if you didn't already know this.

I disagree with "experienced industry professional" about BET.com NOT going anywhere.
Although I don't think it will totally disappear, it definitely WON'T make a significant impact despite the clout it (once) displayed. Now that Bob ain't rolling with Bill Gates (MSFT) anymore, he doesn't have the ONLINE credibility needed to acquire new partnerships, nor does he have the compelling content to keep an ONLINE audience (Blackplanet.com is locking up this spot quickly)
Look for BET.com to admit defeat, and merge with Blackplanet.com so that we could NAME OUR OWN PRICE on flights to DC right from the CHATROOM.

I also cannot believe how susceptible people are to the random bullshit being posted on this site by cowards.
As soon as someone says, as on another page, "Adam, This Person and That Person are behind it," automatically, some people want to attack without thinking. I understand your anger and won't offer insults: I can understand why you and others are enraged. The people behind this site have started a chain reaction of negative postings that will lead to nothing good.
But to clarify things for the last time:
1) I have nothing to do with this site. Soulpurpose wrote that same bullshit last week and it's sad that people have to keep putting my name on their sites. Soulpurpose has since retracted their accusation against me in this week's newsletter.
2) I am not of Caucasian or European descent and have no desire to be (as well as nothing negative to say about anyone that is).
3) I am not trying to insult anyone. All websites, I feel, have something to offer; there is enough room for them all in this marketplace; sites aren't fighting for a piece of the pie; they can all have their own pies. It's great that everyone can make money and present different views on hiphop and urban culture.

I was going to write for UBO and had to deal with a white boy named Adam Matthews and he was telling me the same things that were featured in a lot of these letters posted on this page: he was pointing out all kinds of things about my writing and it sounds exactly like what a few of these letters including some that have other peoples' names on them said. Bob Johnson holds you working black people in contempt. You think HIS kids would date Puffy or Snoop, or even Ice Cube? Or Lil Kim

Question him, like Aaron Magruder did, and he'll come after you. The fact that Magruder was right, well, that's another story.
Everyone is saying Gates here when his real backer is TCI's John Malone. The reason you get the utter crap which is BET is well, John Malone is invested in it. You don't think Bob put all his money down that rathole.
Bill Gates is also tight with Malone and thus, the whole alliance was built.
The fact that BET is a low rent operation who'se TV people make the lowest wage in the DC area is also another story.
Bob will play the race card when you ask about his non-scale rates for comics or unionizing BET. He'll attack Jay Leno for calling for decent wages for the comics who do his shows by playing the front of the race card and then play the comics with the back by promising to promote them with exposure.
These geniuses kill Emerge, which was the only dignified thing about BET (who can forget their attacks on Clarence Thomas), and want to replace it with a black Vanity Fair.
Yeah, black people need to worship celebrity more. That's what we need to read.
And while Ebony is lame now, well, it's been lame since I was a kid in the 1970's, once it was the only expression of black life published on the national scale. They covered lynching and all kinds of stuff which mattered.
But BET is made by the upper class to appeal to what they think middle and especially working class black folks want.
I don't wear Fubu, I don't buy it for my nieces and nephews and certainly don't care about Puffy or DMX. Nor do I care about jazz much either.
I like the BBC, listen to Japanese Pop and lean towards Eddie Bauer and LL Bean. But I'm still black and there are a lot of people like me.
But BET panders to their perceived
demographic and because he's hooked up with Malone, no one can get enough space on cable to challenge them.
The reason no one wants to deal with BET is because Bob isn't really a good manager. He puts on a nice show, but anyone can make money running reruns and interview shows. They have their little insider club and that's that. Which is not what you want to see when you think about sinking millions into a company's website.
Johnson's utterly lame defense is that it's ENTERTAINMENT television. Well bad entertainment is bad entertainment. Instead of investing in some decent programming like children's stuff, things which would have a positive effect, they sell the video lifestyle to kids.
This lameness filters over into his site as well.
If people have the time to complain about Kobe Bryant dating a white teenager, well, they have more time in their day than I do. Who cares who he dates or married? Is he important to anyone who isn't a Lakers fan?
But I don't need a site "where we web". I need a site which can place black life in America in relevant context. Not pimp bad music from kids who need to stop playing like they did hard time.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I grew up in a home where we read two or three papers a day, talked about current events and encouraged watching the news on a nightly basis.
BET doesn't represent that sensibility at all. They stick their news shows on at night and when people go to church. Most of the day it's home of the big booty.
And as far as hating goes-please. You serve me crap on a sandwich, it ain't turkey. It's still crap. If you got bad food at McDonalds, would you not complain because everyone behind the counter was black?
Grownups have a right to demand quality and decent programming from any channel, MTV, the History Channel and BET. If Bob Johnson wants to play the race card, fine let him. He gets judged like everyone else to me.
Just because he wants to sell me a negative image of black life, doesn't mean I can't turn to Nickolodeon, hell, even ER or Law and Order to see positive black male role models.

In regards, to Stephen's post, TRUE and ON POINT. I think that it the opinion of the uneducated and unconfidant to support the doing of the wrong just because they are brothers and sisters.
That fact is the majority of BET's orginal programming both online and off is deflamatory, and degrading to people of color and thus hurts the very people they claim to represent. In my opinion their web efforts only reflect the poor quality of their televison programming, when they aren't showing infomericals.

BET is assured that it will never lose it's place on most cable systems since they are too scared to remove it. Nevertheless with his future assured foor the next twenty years, Robert Johnson should not waste the medium that has made him a household name. Low-brow programming and below-scale payments of talent are inexcusable. If Mr. Johnson is rich enough to buy an airline, he can certainly afford to pay comedians industry union wages and broadcast out of Los Angeles.
The can make some bold moves such as:
1) On Sunday morning, putting one of the Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan's marathon speeches on Sunday morning instead of those corny-ass religious services on Sunday.I am sure the nation of Islam would be happy to provide such tapes to overcome the silent "blackout" that the news media had given the NOI since Khalia Mohammed's New Jersey speech.
2) Instead of running degrading infomertials on the weekend that bring no revenue, BET should televise original programming from college stations, especially HBCU's. There is not much revenue, but take some risks and at least offer something that will compel us to watch BET on weekends.
3) Get out of the pay per view business for their "original" movies and sports events. TBS and TNT, WGN all offer the same stuff for free. BET PPV has nothing that even Don King would try and sell. Pay for movies and show them on BET weekend. When TBS has a James Bond marathon, have a Shaft marathon.
4) There have been several complaints about the volume of commercials. That's a studio problem. This is 2000, please buy some new equipment. |

You two have made some of the most consistently well thought out and insightful post on the subjeact oif BET that I have seen in a while. I just wanted to say that it hasnt gone unnoticed or unappreciated.
Let me add that BET will vrey soon have competition there are several stations lining up to offer just the kind of content you both mentioned in your post. There is a company in DC called NUE-TV (New Urban Entertainment) which is going to launch on the AT&T system in the fall. They are backed by Quincy Jones and from what I understand they arent going to have 5 different video shows all showing the same 20 booty videos. They also wont have reruns of comedy shows shot in 19987 and edited to together to make them seem funny.
