Hookt.com Gets $12 mil in Financing, That's $1,000,000 Per Visitor
|
 |
Peter Griffith and Chaz Walker of Hookt.com, a flashy urban broadband play with plans for an e-commerce and community aspect that currently is non-existent, have secured a second round of cash from Chase Capital Entertainment Partners, and Warburg Pincus Equity Partners.
Their immediate plans are probably to fork over half of that to support Oven Digital's portfolio of flashy, yet highly unfunctional, sites with a concurrent theme of illegible text over dark backgrounds and annoying sounds.
Let's hope they go buy a domain name that people can spell. We hear that the billboard on Houston St. is available for you to rent again.

Beat Bomb?
This site is beat.
This site is a bomb.
(not _the_ bomb)
And besides, the mouseover sound for 'Beat Bomb' sounds like "meatball"! Maybe that's because Harris Salat of Oven Digital was thinking about what a meatball he is!
-Banks |
Hookt getting 12mil in financing is the perfect example of how these Chase Capital type-people don't understand urban culture. What a gigantic waste of money...don't they see that Hookt ain't the bomb?
Is Chase for real? They chase me down each month to pay my bill on time for this?
|
I think Hookt is way dope.. If I could get on the site that is...
But anyway, they got the shit no one else has - so when I finally make it on there - I aint mad... Seems like ya'll caught feelings though... What's up they owe you five dollars or something... |

Little bit of red herring, but this URL is registered to 44 Wall Street, same address as hookt.com.
Very crafty, lambasting yourself as a cover while going after the real target.

Hookt is a bunch of nigga that don't know shit about shit on the web...They need to stop sweating Urban Music Matrix.
|
What ALL these internet companies geared toward a "urban" market need to do is stop blowing smoke, throwing over-hyped up launch parties and put out some product..none of em' has really done shit when you really think about it......all this funding, but are they making any money to secure a future and presens on the web?..i doubt it..just employing eveybodys friends |
Look at this Sh*t....
Urban Expose (URBANEXPOSE-DOM) 44 Wall St. New York, NY 10005-2401 US
Domain Name: URBANEXPOSE.COM
Administrative Contact, Technical Contact, Zone Contact, Billing Contact:
Attucks, Crispus (CAM629) crispus@URBANEXPOSE.COM Urban Expose
44 Wall St. New York, NY 10005 212-894-3790 x1010
Hookt.com's tight ass office space and a onebox.com phone number. These cats are evil geniuses. |
Congratulations to Urban Expose for demonstrating what the web does best--provide a free-speech communication tool for the people that would rather sit at home and create the New World Order than waste a dime on free drinks for a bunch of using,wanna-be-socialites at a launch party.
Urban Expose inevitably has more traffic by now than all the "urban" sites combined. And I'll bet you have 1/100000th of the staff and none of the venture capital. What? No un-optimized pretty pictures? No 5-years-before-its-time broadband effort? No 2,000 word articles on Lil' Kim? No Flash front door? Message boards that actually work? Short provocative content that sparks discussion?
I guess we should thank the Wall Streeters for paying a bunch of bargain basement pimps and chickenheads fat salaries to pretend to build their pretty, poor-functioning sites that are barely impressive on a T-1 when the investors drop by for a visit because the record and print industry fucks who are "running" the game forgot to hire a tech department.
Yeah, umm, thanks. Thanks so much for making "urban" look "incompetent." Thanks for pissing on a bunch of young people's dreams. Thanks for spending so much $ on promo items that you didn't leave enough to send anyone to a training seminar. We're racing to the top at 26.6! |
UMMMM.. IT'S NOT 26.6 - It's 28.8... Thank goodness someone is going to Tech seminars... |

how funny is it that Blaze fell through? I can't beleive that Crap Pages is back. I be seeing the old editor, PE Cobb. What a scrub!
yo, this site should have a poll as to who has the most BLUPPIES!!
How much you wanna bet that 360 will grab Flex and say 'Flex, you're blk, you're hot, and you know the flava! Get down with us.' And Russell will sleep with him first, then make it sound like some official announcement "flex is Hip Hop.'
Who do you think will be the first site to get punched in they face?
It won't happen @ SubUrban Box Office. 360 will prolly be the first place
Hookt is just a wannabe Ego Trip

Congratulations UBO on a great site.
This is so like cool; put up a site and insultevery other website buy your own then have youremployees (Dream Hampton and Karen Good) get on and insult everyone while propping up UBO. Then have James Andrews (aka Andy Platnum accusepeople like Kevin Powell, Knox Robinson and Ronin Ro)of being behind the site. Keep upthe great work UBO.
(You guys screwed up by putting George Jackson at number one on your 'Power Index.') |
I think UBO is behind this cheesy web site. They have no other way to compete with other sites. They have a bunch of no name homosexuals and tech geeks working for them, and investors expecting results for the money they handed over, and a bunch of garbage web sites like the latin thing and indieplanet. So they have to resort to this. They're truly pathetic if its UBO behind this site. |

Ok, allow someone who knows the web business from way back to educate some of you. Although it sucks, and the staff is full of people that could never get hired elsewhere (a la nitro, dream hampton, etc.) UBO will win because it's owned by white men. If you don't know this, do your research. Why is their race important? As The Source proved, any white man can enter the black man's game and beat him because black people hate on black people more than anyone else.
Russell will Sell 360hiphop to some white company like he did defjam, because he's only a hustler and you shouldn't expect more from him. Selwyn will eventually be fired or quit because, although he's a nice guy, he just doesn't have any backbone, and Russell runs right over people like that. Kris Ex is not even talented enough or experienced enough to be relevant. Sheena will do what she has to do to feed her kids.
Hookt will fail, or be acquired. Bet.com (as much as you may hate it) isn't going anywhere. The owner has the blessing of the white man (exp. the head of Bet was recently given, at cheap price, an entire airline.) That's their boy (as in stepandfetchit).
Volume is a Time Warner property, so it will most likely be dissolved at some point. Time Warner has never committed any serious resources to the black market. They won't start now just because the Hot Boys' hoopin' and hollerin' is selling millions.
TheSource.com will be folded into a major media entity like TimeWarner or Fox because dave mays has never believed in the internet and wants someone else to pay for his entry. Therefore, The Source will probably secure the number one or two spot. Also, the company is now wholely owned by a white jewish man. They will not let him fail.
Aka.com is a hustle, so it will fold quietly, or be folded into another company. Sony has not shown a serious committment to the project.
platform.net will be acquired. soon.
y2g.com. Well, since Fubu is actually owned by a consortium of korean and jewish business men, expect y2g to be around for a while in one form or another. Most likely as a pure ecommerce play designed to exploit the Fubu brand.
john shector & stretch armstrong's rapnetwork.com is too little too late. But, because they are both young white jewish guys, don't bet completely against them. Some old jewish money might decide to make their project legit.
Bottom line? This entire discusssion on this site is largely irrelevant, because in the end, the white man will own the leading online black portal. So stop pretending as if you didn't already know this.
an experienced industry professional
[this post is anonymous and has no clout.] |
I disagree with "experienced industry professional" about BET.com NOT going anywhere.
Although I don't think it will totally disappear, it definitely WON'T make a significant impact despite the clout it (once) displayed. Now that Bob ain't rolling with Bill Gates (MSFT) anymore, he doesn't have the ONLINE credibility needed to acquire new partnerships, nor does he have the compelling content to keep an ONLINE audience (Blackplanet.com is locking up this spot quickly)
Look for BET.com to admit defeat, and merge with Blackplanet.com so that we could NAME OUR OWN PRICE on flights to DC right from the CHATROOM.

PS I agree with everything else you said though. |
This whole mass exodus from urban magazines to the Internet makes me laugh.
Eventually all these overpaid-ass, unskilled ex-hip hop magazine drones are gonna get axed when this dotcom/urban e-biz is mismanaged into the ground.
Inevitably, BizDev fuckers and the people who run the tech departments will be the only ones left standing.
Everyone else is gonna have to go back to their bullshit "$35,00.00 per year salary range" gigs.
|
You tell them Ms. bee...however Biz Dev guys arent all geniuses either....plus didnt you just get a job at ogilvy interactive...please state your experience |
BizDev fuckers are usually not geniuses, but they're pretty good at hustling large salaries for themselves.
My background is "urban" film/video and commercial production from way back. I worked at a general ad agency for a few years in a couple different positions. While I was doing that I also had a second full-time career freelancing as a publicist and as a writer/special events consultant for different urban magazines/websites. I got deeper insight into the new-media hustle when I tried to shop a concept to the usual-suspect websites and watched as (months later) it went down in a tangle of red tape. So, I had a hook-up in the Ogilvy HR department, got an interview with a high-profile account at OgilvyInteractive and got hired. I've done a good deal of entertainment/industry shit so I have my clippings and the list of industry events I've produced, but I also have extensive "traditional" management experience like project management, budget management (especially knowing how to do budget projections), etc. Looking at it from both a creative and advertising perspective,I can already see what these sites need to do(and what they're not doing) to become successful in making money and presenting excellent content. |
All you Internet Wannabes Repeat After me
Template driven designs are Wack
ad min tools a great site does not make
you will never be Platform cause your not smart enough
just cause your man says "yo thats hot" doesnt mean your site is gonna survive
and last but never least
CONTENT IS KING

The seem to have a nice concept save for the battle star gallatica force over that sound like a mix between a constipated twinkie and them big motherfukin bad guys!!!
Anyway i still enjoy the concept, but the flash is not working seamlessly, so again the ineptness for flash programming is showing and making me rethink my site.
I like their logo and how it morphs into turn tables, all of these little cute things are ok, but when it comes down to content hookt is sorely in need of dedicated talent, no more rippin MTV News headlines people, common you can do better than that
I want to know about the eric onassis name change and the beef he obviously has with def jam and the implications for the future, you know some actual content that I may just not see on fucking MTV!!!
On one hand it is indeed a flashy site with enticing eye candy for a 15 year old, but I need content hell, I'm 26!!!
(today I might add 6/28/1974, but you aint hear that one from me!)
|
hey -- if UPROAR.com can secure 40 million in funding then HOOKT is certainly deserving no doubt ... |
Does anybody out there really know how much traffic these urban sites are getting? There seems to be a whole lot of lying going on.</p>
How are these companies dupping these investors?
