88hiphop On The Highway To Heaven.
|
 |
Randy Nkonoki-Ward and Mark Kotlinski started 88hiphop on a 900 number. They found the ultimate partner in Pseudo. For a 50 percent stake in 88hiphop, Randy and Mark now drew 6 figure salaries, access to a studio, web servers to stream content, and a staff to control. The possibilities seemed endless after some key successes and the deep pockets of Pseudo backing it up. All things are not as they seem, as the well eventually ran dry.
Pseudo-Management
Then Randy's management style began to take shape. It first started in on the show and the audience that would come to watch. Randy had strong beliefs in not cursing and smoking, two features which are prominent in a rebellious youth underground culture. Randy quickly found himself at odds with artists who came through to represent, who found Randy's abrasive commands about not smoking or to shut up as not cool. Several times artists has to be calmed from getting pugilistic with Randy's for his lack of talent relation skills. Randy also was paranoid about anyone else doing a hip-hop show at Pseudo.
Randy made sure his deal was amended so that 88hiphop was the exclusive hip-hop show at Pseudo. Anyone else that started an urban music show would have to do so under the 88hiphop banner and ultimately under Randy and Marl's creative control. Randy would make sure that all the shows at 88hiphop branding on them and start squawking if they didn't. Randy also made sure he excluded anyone working for him from joining the power structure at Pseudo. He paid everyone very low salaries, if at all. If Randy didn't like something you did, he would exclude you from meetings. If Randy did fire you, he would often hire you back just long enough to get what he needed from you, only to let you go again.
The website for 88hiphop, the portal by which people accessed the show, has always been poor and neglected by Randy and Mark. They lost an opportunity to really develop 88hiphop as a central hub for hip-hop on the web. To them 88hiphop was a small grainy video window that advertisers should pay for, not a thriving community to sell value-added services and goods too.
88hiphop and Hookt
88hiphop was featured as a content channel on Hookt. It was a short-lived relationship as Randy never responded to any of Hookt's requests for cross-promotion. 88hiphop had burned SOHH like this.
Randy's was incensed at Hookt for putting up a billboard across the street from Pseudo studios on Houston St. He felt like they were trying to 1 up him. He even felt slighted about the font they used. Hey! That's MY font!
Hookt quietly dropped 88hiphop from its channel list after they realized Randy wasn't playing nice.
Exit Strategy
Randy and Mark are on the exit path from Pseudo. They are playing with the idea of a record label and claim they don't want to be limited to the Internet. They are trying to court what artists they didn't insult during they're run at Pseudo.
Pseudo is in control of the 88hip brand. Unlike the other channel heads that quit, Randy and Mark will have to be shown the door. After running thru an average budget of 1 million a year at Pseudo, 88hiphop generated under $100,000 for Pseudo. They once got a Sprite promotion that even allhiphop.com (http://www.allhiphop.com) could get.
Pseudo-Economics
The new CEO is the reason for most of the shows demise. Upper management is now the sole determiner of content. They have gutted most of the shows, firing the producers from most of them and keeping only the hosts in most cases. They are moving to a 24-hour streaming format where 15-minute news programs on niche markets will air. Other programming segments will be determined by the 25 chatters that are on Pseudo's site at any given time.
As for generating revenue, the upper-management spent most of their time getting venture capital and courting Real Networks. They were extremely good at this. They just forgot to build and provide tools for shows to do e-commerce. They also restricted producers from getting sponsorship packages or advertising. Most show producers had to hand their contacts over to a biz-dev or advertising person in management to handle the deal. Often the exec was studying for their MBA or didn't understand the niche market as the producer of the show did and would fumble the ball. These roadblocks hampered show producers and hosts from generating revenue, however they are the first to get cut. A pure content-play that now puts no value on the talent that creates the content.
Pseudo's website is no longer the cutting edge layout from the Josh Harris days. It now is in disrepair. It features a frame-based interface on the front page with Flash, JavaScript and a server-push featuring tiny webcam pictures of a perpetually empty studio. (The shows are currently all on hiatus) It uses small popup windows for bulletin boards, chat and the video clips, which hinder rather than help.
If you signed up for a branded e-mail account at one of the canceled shows, you should consider getting an e-mail account at a website that will be around for a while, like Indieplanet.

Yeah what. Im the first one to speak on this one. What, what. So, let me set the precedent. 88 hip hop is a flip flop. UBO is the body rock, what. 360 hip hop is the sure shot, what. Yeah Black Planet is fly as a bird in the sky. What, Im #1 on this. My post drop science for all you non believers. WHAT.
A man and a chicken walk into a bar and the chicken starts to cluck very loudly after a couple drinks. So the man chops off the chickens head, pluck off all the feathers and deep fries it. When the man starts to eat the wings he breaks them apart and says...damn chicken didnt know who he was clucking with. Give me my clout. I was just kidding. It means a lot to me considering how it was attained. I wrote some very credible stuff which reflected the articles and numerous post by some of the internets top notch intellectuals. If I could get my clout back, I would hold myself in high esteem. I feel naked without my clout. Alright, cool, cool, clout and Im out. Man, negative 3. Up from the depths of negative 5. But is my struggle in vain? Will my clout be stripped from me once again? My clout is almost worthless it seems. What value does one get from forswearing people and theyre work. Oh, I forgot I can get in to all the hot spots free with my Urban Expose Diamond Clout Card. |
That's funky... there were two other posts before Truland (vym1@aol.com) posted the yeah what #1 comments. What happened to those earlier posts? Is UE experiencing technical difficulties?
|
All this negativity...Please stop. The real of the news can be found at urban247.com. What are these overpriced web plays tryin' to do anyway? If they were real they wouldn't need as much venture capital as the seem to need. What happened to the days of a young, energetic, cavalier businessperson taking his dreams in his hands and molding them into a tangible reality? They still exist...just not amoung the subset of people who seem to get all the mentions on this site.
What hapened to the two bit hustler that figures out a way to talk fast enough to bilk a greedy wealthy person looking to make a quick buck (more recently referred to as venture capitalists) out of his money by making promises he knows he can't deliver on (and probably never intended to try anyway)? I'll tell you what happened to those people. You read about some of them every day on this site...
Never has so much ineptitude been relabled as bad luck or bad management or bad descisions. THESE PEOPLE ARE HUSLERS MY FRIENDS...Don King is their Hero. They dont care about you. They don't care about what you want. They dont care about artistic or creative integrity. You look at thier site and say "I could create a better portal than UBO!" YOU COULD!!!
I used to write for The Guage at UBO. The best thing I can say about them is that their checks did clear. When I called I always planned on getting transferred to the wrong person at least once. It sounded as if they work in a warehouse...what is that all about? They had no business cards, no letter head, no business envelopes and their checks were printed on Quickbooks software!!!??? What is that about? (They did clear though!!!) How do you have $50 mil and no letter head? No Business cards? AND NO CONTENT!!! Am I the only person that realizes that UBO is a site with NO CONTENT??!! How do you navigate the thing? I click on something and nothing happens! What the fuck is that??? I didn't go to school for business, but I know a little sumpin, sumpin... I know UBO payed me thousands of dollars for stories that never got published!!! What the fuck is that??? (But the checks did clear!) UBO, Hookt, 360Hip Hop, Volume, Pseudo, 88Hip Hop, Bamflex!!!???, all this shit part of the pledging requirements necessary to induct America's newest millionaires into the "Wealthy People's Club" Why Dont we talk about the merits of BlackVoices.com or BlackPlanet.com? Oh! 'Cause they work, yea, my bad, I don't know what I was thinking about. Anyway I have raved long enough. This shit is wack. Don't believe the hype and dont worry, Flava's vision ain't blurry.
PEACE |
I was wondering when someone was gonna bring the heat 88's way.
I check out this site every once in a while because at times you guys break things down lovely with analysis of sites, but at times the focus gets a little too personal.
Thanks for taking it easy on us, but why don't or why didn't you mention any of the good things that we and other sites have done and continue to do in this ever evolving urban new media space. Think about it you might have wound up an assistant audio engineer at some no name recording studio or producing beats for some no name artist trying to get a deal.
There is some slander with your posting, but any of the people/organizations mentioned in the un-trues know my number if they have any doubts.
Peace,

I don't know who took my clout, but I doesn't make a difference. When I speak intelligent people listen, because I say some stupid things on here. That's what this forum is all about right. You can tear down my clout. And still I rise. |
Randy Nkonoki-Ward (if that's really you posting on this site)
It was big of you to respond to the UE article. I do know of few kats that actually benefited from having been on 88hiphop. For them - I give you props.
That said, if the stuff in the article is true... you are feelin yourself a bit too much. Take the criticism in the article constructively and fix up your act.
It ain't too late for 88. |

I never could (or can for that matter) grasp how HipHop , a culture can be sucsessfully translated on-line without losing a large part of its essense-and core audience.
I thought 88 was a cool idea, but wondered about those young cats around the way who missed out on some of their favorite artists......well, maybe it wasnt for them-they have radio, and TV...i guess it was primarilly directed to college heads, overseas cats, and those priviliged to own a computer.....
.heh heh...HipHop for "members only"....join the club or be ass out. |

...hmmm..posts do seem to be dissapearing here.. |
Working in Development at Buena Vista Television, I had the opportunity to deal with Josh Harris and some of the Psuedo.com heads. We first got their number on a Sixty Minutes Segment were they came off as the biggest pricks. Yet, we were investigating the idea of tersting programs in development online first, then bringing them on air. Not knowing anything about the Online world it seemed like Psuedo.com wou;d be a Co. to establish business contacts with, (despite them appearing like arrogant arses on 60 minutes). Anyway, are first impression was confirmed and our initial conversation with Josh Harris lasted les than 10 minutes, apparently because He couldn't see the benefit of hooking up with Disney. About a month later Josh called back, singing something of a new tune. It seems like Josh & Co. were now interested in the business of producing programs for televsion. We kind of found this funny at this point, especially considering the demo of Psuedo programming they sent us. |
that's a pretty accurate description of what went on over at 600 broadway...just want to say PEACE to the KoolOut.com heads, The Beatminerz crew, the Netcast staff, Moka, Tone Def, Rican Rob who always swung by to bless me with vinyls, and the frustrated but hard working members at 88hiphop who tried to see past the weird vision Randy and Mark had (someone once told me they were on the christian hip-hop bandwagon??? but rumours are rumours)...i knew it was all going down hill when i would never hear Evil Dee shout out "COME ON KICK IT" during his beatminerz radio show.

I don't think Mark and Randy had any control over their destiny.
Accoring to Business Week magazine (July 24, Page EB71), Pseudo simply ran out of cash. One June 23, Pseudo CEO David Bohrman informed the staff that one quaretr of them would be laid off (60 out of 240) and that they would produce 1 channel instead of 10.
Whatever power trip these two boys were on (pushing around artists) was only in their minds. |
I think it is very sad that 88hiphop is being bashed...True some bad things can be said about the founders, but they did do alot in terms of bringing attention to the genre of hip-hop on the net. I would like to know the genius that wrote this piece, it doesn't seem to be in the same writing style as Crispus. The grammer is poor, and there are many spelling errors. As I frequent many of the online sites, the only ones that I feel are doing any kind of good job at this are: ughh.com, sohh.com and allhiphop.com. What is the deal at the comment "even allhiphop.com could get?"..the site is better than bullshit sites like aka.com that rely on content from geocities and all that shit. If you have to look at hip-hop on the net (which is something I am getting very sick of by the way), check one of those 3. They are the sureshots. |
I see that this article was changed up a bit...this one reads different then the one earlier, so disregard the spelling comment, looks like spell check was utilized. Postings are getting kind of thin...lets talk yall!! |
Yo, ohsokool
you said: "heh heh...HipHop for "members only"....join the club or be ass out. "
How about we have hip-hop heads/fans start investing in PCs instead of ice, Lex's and FUBU? How about we try to get more computers in the public schools?? The club is wide open!!! Cats prefer to be on the street.... it's their loss!!
Radio and TV is what is making Hip-Hop look bad.... staright brainwashing cats, making think it's all about "Bling, Bling" and "Party Up"..... there more than that... |
Well that's what happens when a Catholic goes to an Orthadox prayer.......he never really cares. |
YOW REGEND!!!: how you a go big up all crew and forget the nigga risking his life with the camera in kingston?? huh huh??
|
AfFlicted:
Thought you did not like HipHop? Thought you said it was for the cultureless. What up? |
B-COOL: it IS for the cultureless...and my work at KOOLOUT had nothing to do with either HIP HOP or 88..it was related to a psuedo-funded (thats for sure) dancehall/reggae show called Dubspot.
does that help?

Back to who is behind this site:
For real who is it? I just recently got an email from UE talking about their new mobile news feature. They named the extension to the aforementioned Orisha (an African ancenstoral religion) Engine, the MAAFA.
The term MAAFA is kiswahili for "disaster" or "terrible occurrence," and is used to describe the African holocast (slavery).
What's up with that?
|
AfFLicted:
At least you are consistant - I respect you for that... even though I disagree with your premise about us cultureless HipHop black american folks. - but we done gone down there before. I guess we shall just agree to disagree.

Re: Crispus_Attucks on FC thread:
His original post on the FC Discussion voard was:
____
"Some companies in the index are reporting themselves as laying off people when they really didn't do it. They just want the exspoure and hits from FC. How do you feel about this?"
"Should I out the companies that are doing this?"
"urban exposè (http://www.urbanexpose.com)"
____
And then some folks asked him to "out" the companies he alluded to. That's when he said the AKA quote Oduduwa posted here.
In its entire context it does not seem as if he is saying that he is affiliated with AKA.com. His "we", I beleive refers to the folks at UE.
The saga continues.

I ran into Mark Kotlinski several years ago when I considered writing a Paper Magazine piece on 88 Hip Hop. Back then, to his credit, 88 Hip Hop was one of the most influential forces online in hip hop. They were large: 88 Hip Hop had the rib-busting ox strength in the Alley. I attended a "State of Hip Hop" conference at Pseudo's offices, complete with the the sweetest spread of soul food and Red Stripe. Fortified by the meal, I started research on the article, which would take me several weeks, and during that time already 88's strength was eroding. It seemed impossible for me to write a piece on a sinking ship for hip Paper, so I stopped. Now, I'm not going to go so far as to say that the no-curse and smoke rules were a contributing factor, but to be frank: 88 Hip Hop did not really compel its community. And Pseudo is all about VC funding, ads, and COMMUNITY. Sadly, now Pseudo, which I loved when it was sort of the "Public Access" of the Alley, is doing partnerships with The Observer and covering the national conventions for their politics emphasis. Good for Josh and the new CEO( who, I hear comes from Network TV), but bad for the denizens of the Alley who loved the edgy urban focus of the old Pseudo. Pseudo will never be what it was. If only 88 placed more emphasis in holding and engaging and enlarging the community--a great tragedy--then perhaps good old Pseudo wouldn't be on its way to being coopted by The Man into a new network complete with Old Establishment coverage. |
Thuglite:
You are so fucking wack with your little commercial for 360 Hiphop. I know who you are, Selwyn. Or is it your boyfriend Kris? You two are clowns. Same as you were when you both tried to hit on me at The Source. But your site is fucking wack. You guys said you were a Dream Team but your site was garbage. So now, since you didn't make no money, you have to send your gay bosses to go sing for their supper at Sony and other clueless companies who actually believe Russell means anything to hiphop today. Nigga, please; Selwyn and Kis, you niggas were wack up at The Source and now that you're holding hands up at 360, you're even worse. |
And Selwyn:
One last thing, baldiebean. You made all this stink about leaving The Source because you wanted to work for "honest" people. You're full of shit wiht your shiny pants and white folk ways. You left for the money, just like everyone else up there. Your site is wack, and for all the money you spent on hiring your worthless friends, gee, your shit sure does have a lot of grammatical mistakes. |
All of this is so disappointing. Will there ever be a team a responsible people who will actually understand their job allocation and function? Are all CEOs actually the hustlers that Truland has claimed them to be? People need to stop talking ish and actually do a real site! |
Another B Cool PSA:
Are you minority operated? Here's your big chance to pitch your idea to top venture capitalists! DIGICON, Urbanworld Film Festival's new conference dedicated to convergence and digital distribution, will grant this unique opportunity to five winning business ideas on August 4 at the Director's Guild of America. Finalists will be notified by July 28. How many differnet voices do you hear in the writting on this site. I mean to say how many different styles of writting and thus how many authors? I keep getting the feeling that Bonz Malone may be behind some of the writing. Can anyone confirm or refute this?
In my summary investigation of the writting style I couldnt find more then one voice/style. Anyone have anything?

Industry trade magazines such as Billboard, Impact, Urban Network, Industry Standard, Advertising Age and Adweek exist to report and critique about the very industries they serve. The reporters / editiors make themselves known, and those who dont agree, write letters

YOU ALL WERE A REVOLVING DOOR OF UNHAPPY, MISTREATED, UNDERPAID EMPLOYEES, AND DISGRUNTED (AND RIGHTFULLY SO) CO-FOUNDERS WHO WERE DOWN FOR THE LOVE BUT WHEN IT CAME TIME TO SHARE THE DESSERTS YOU WERE STINGY AND CHEAP, YOU DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO EFFECTIVELY DEAL WITH PEOPLE OR CULTIVATE CONSTRUCTIVE AND BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIPS BECAUSE OF YOU ALL'S PETTY AND INSECURE BEHAVIOUR.
WHEN YOU HOLD ON TO SOMETHING TOO TIGHTLY YOU LOSE IT. AND YOU GUYS LOST IT. FEAR, RIGIDITY, INFLATED EGOS AND IGNORANCE HAS COSTED YOU BOTH.

Well, now that Robert Galinsky is heading up technology efforts for a non-profit Art site, it will be really interesting to see what happens to Pseudo. He co-founded Pseudo with Josh Harris back when it was a all radio shows. It was pretty tight then, but far too advanced for what advertisers, or the business comunity in general, could understand. |

galinsky co-founded pseudo? that's BULLSHIT. that fat fuck practically brought the whole co. down with his massive ego and lack of skill. if he claims to have co-founded pseudo, he is up to his old lying-ass tricks and he must be slapped. he got canned last year after running though almost as much $$$ as 88hiphop wasted. but at least people liked 88 unlike the endless versions of the useless galinsky show. lynne, you got PLAYED. |

Folks, there were two Gallinskys at Pseudo. Phil (Philly) Galinsky who did comedy stuff and interstitials, and his bro who just went by "Gallinsky", and ran Channel P, the arts channel on Pseudo. I can back up most of what Tyler Durden said (though not the all-caps. Chill!) as a former netcast employee. As for Galinsky, even though I never dug his programming, I found him fairly easy to work with especially compared to some of the other "Producers" at Pseudo. People with no video production experience should not attempt to direct. As for him being fat, you may be thinking of Mark COTLINSKY who is the Mark of 88hip-hop. |
Sorry to get off the subject, BUT there is too much talent around here to not try and tap into it.
I'm looking for constructive ideas and partners to help me reshape my site, BLACKMUSIC.COM into a strong urban destination.
I hope to begin reviving the site in the next few weeks.
Please email me at brian@blackmusic.com
