Adam Kidron and UBO Plans new Additions to its Empty House of Straw
Of late, the trickle of information coming out of UBO has developed into a torrent, exposing the inner workings, or lack thereof no pun intended, of UBO. From the technical specification for the planned e-commerce operation to the future structure of its centralized business development group, information about future additions to the UBO network is more riveting then the final scene of Quilumbo de Palmeres.

In order to put the future plans of UBO in context lets first review the UBO Creative Standards document, which is possibly the most comic content UBO currently has. This document is intended to establish both the creative and user experience standards which all UBO sites are supposed to follow. For example, the Creative Standards document states, "Pop-up [windows] should not be used to display content except for media players and the like." However when you take a look at Latinflava, which spawns several pop-up widows while you surf the site, it's clear that noone at UBO bothered to read, much less implement, its own creative guidelines. UBO desperately needs to reread this document and begin to implement some of the guidelines laid-out for a positive user experience. The sad fact is that all of the sites in the UBO family violate at least two of the creative guidelines set fourth in UBO's own Creative Standards document. Take a look at the Creative Standards document and see how many violations you can find in the UBO network.

On a slightly less comic note the future plans of SoulPurpose also known as "Impact 247 clone", hopes to attract users with the standard web tool kit. These include a daily poll, guest editors, classifieds, a section called "community" (as if community was something you added to a website) and the same ubiquitous and overused free email that everyone else has. They are also planning on providing editorial coverage in several new departments, Sports, New Media & Technology, Arts & Society and International Business. Of course, if you subscribed to PR Newswire and read the entertainment and sports press releases you would get the same information 3 weeks earlier but you would miss out on all the name dropping and great party reviews. James "Andy Platinum" Andrews hopes that these additions to soul purpose will help, "brand SoulPurpose as the authoritative voice in urban entertainment news", increase traffic and "reinforce our credibility". The revenue streams they foresee as part of this grand vision include plans to syndicate content to radio stations, E-Billboards and Inside.com. They also plan the formation of a direct marketing initiative tentativly named "Andy’s Goodie Bag". Soul Purpose also hopes to sell premium subscription based services such as a "Platnum" area on their website, a "Score Card" research report, a "Virtual Conference" section, individualized focus groups and the all important "SoulPurpose Planner".

Come mid-July when UBO rolls out e-commerce on Hairweb, Soul Purpose, SOHH and LukeWorld, we will finally begin to get a sense of the network strategy that UBO is attempting. When the e-commerce system launches, UBO will roll out its Universal Profile Manager!, which will track your options on any of the sites in the UBO network and pester you for more info when you travel to any of the other sites. E-commerce will also be available on Latin Flava, Othervisions, Indie Planet, Rev Run, Big Lev and Shine365 but not until early August. The management at UBO is also very excited about several new websites its planning on having the overworked and inexperienced staff writers push out to the public, these sites include Sportslife, Hooplife and the Urban Music Matrix.

According to James "Andy Platnum" Andrews, who refers to himself as the shadow of Urban Culture, "SoulPurpose.com is not just a website, it’s a movement for, by and about the urban architects of pop culture.” Perhaps, James and all the executives of UBO should spend a bit more time thinking about the architecture of the UBO business, instead of cheerleading for the architects of pop culture.

Did anyone else's antennae fly up when they read the line "'SoulPurpose' also known as '"Impact 247 clone'". Wasn't SoulPurpose first? Not that I'd endorse either over the other, but this reads kinda strange.

I want to know why AKA is running UBO adcodes on their site. Does anyone have the answer? I checked out the UBO sites in detail this past weekend, and I am predicting that the operation will be out of business within a year. This site offers absolutley nothing for the users, and with the exception of sohh.com, I can't imagine hairweb or any of the other sites receiving any signifcant amount of traffic, and sohh had their traffic before being sucked into the abyss of UBO. Just my thoughts, I could be wrong!

Never mind UBO. What is Impact247.com? There is a never-ending flash message and the page is COMPLETELY BLANK. I have tried accessing the page with both Netscape and Explorer - and I get the same lame results.

Check out the 360 AKA UBo article on this site. It has a run down of some of whats going on. They basically say that AKA is dead and UBO is behind the scence pulling the strings until an official take over. Ok so I'm exagerating a bit but thats what I got out of reading it a month or so ago.

Impact247 is currently an e-mail newsletter. Here's an excerpt from a recent edition:

"OneWorldRussell Simmons Loses One World to The Source

By Michelle Horn
The New York Post's Page Six section seems to have added salt to a wound
that was already festering. Russell Simmons' One World Music Beat, a show
that aired on the Warner Bros. network and was reportedly beating other
shows in its time slot across the country in February (Impact247, May 19),
is off the air. It will be replaced this fall by a new program, The Source
All Access." And so on.

Look, I don't care if I'm the only one that admits it: I read SoulPurpose and I read Impact247 just like I read Page Six in the Post. While I'm at it, I confess I read the NY Post's Business Section on the train before I peruse the Wall Street Journal and NY Times when I reach the office. AND I read the Gotham section of New York magazine before I read the cover stories. A little bold type reading never heart anybody.

To Taneshia Nash Laird:
Reading page Six of the Post is one thing, we all know what it is and so does the Post, reading Soul Purpose and thinking that its the Financial Times is quite another. Unlike, the Post's page 6, Soul Purpose wants everyone to believe that it is a real news source. reading the article about the plans of Soul Purpose its clear that they dont understand that they are nothing more then the electronic version of bathroom reading material. Now thre is nothing wrong with that, I have jet on the hamper like everyone else. But damn, who are they kidding? Research reports? Subcriptions to a "Platinum" area on thier website? Come'on. There is no way in hell I'm going to BET for stock news and I'm not going to soul purpose for research.

They should focus on what they started out doing, talking about rumors and giving props to the Black executives that Billboard and Variety ignore. Trying to remake themselves as a news organization, a research company and a direct marketing company is a quick road to an early death.

And it sounds like they're trying to do the "news organization, a research company and a direct marketing company" to compete with Vanguarde's eminent onslaught of products (including Urban IQ, SideHustle, Impact 247, etc. -- again, I only know about Vanguarde's products from their e-mails to me).

You should re-read the article, it talks about what SP is planning to do and one of the things is start charging for access to "platnum" areas of the site. Of course there is no section of the SP site worth paying for but thats just my opinion. Hey You sound like you know quite a bit about Vanguarde and your disclaimer rings hollow. What gives? Are you a vanguarde promoter working on assigment to build up the companies sites?

To Andrew:
Impact247 is Vanguardes new website fo rthe magazine Impact, which is a trade magazine for radio people. I havent seen it since Vanguarde bought it but a company I used to work used to have compies in the waiting area and it was garbage back then. I dont know if its improved but think of impact as soul purpose in print.

Any of you web developers actually look at the UBO Creative Standarads Doc?

http://www.urbanexpose.com/discover/ubo.html

Does not look that official, but it would probably improve the overall experience of UBO if the sites were consistant and actually followed a creative standard.

The problem is... creative standard or not, without any worthwhile content the sites will have no stickiness even if they do look and feel better.

As for UE... webpage design 101, if you print a long document with a link in it, underline that bad boy so that people can see that it is there. Don't ASSume that someone will mouse over.

Funny how y'all can slam others websites, but yours (aside from the postings) ain't all that hot either.

Laughing out loud. As far as I know, they haven't really launched anything in any significant way. I'm sort of in wait and see mode.

I happened to meet someone from Impact247 at an event and she has apparently added me to the e-mail list. I will confess that I do follow Vanguarde's moves pretty closely because it appears they are working on building the kind of company I always wanted to build -- an entertainment conglomerate that features images that I recognize. Also, like I said, when I worked at -- I'll name names -- Veronis Suhler --www.veronissuhler.com -- I always felt that there was room for a black company doing the same thing. I still do. Companies like Jupiter Communications and Forrester are making a killing in the B2B research game, so maybe Vanguarde's UrbanIQ -- www.urbaniq.com -- has a chance. The site needs major work. I don't think they've updated it in a while. They are probably a little too niche to make a real impact on the aforemention research outfits, but maybe they'll do well enough to maintain a going concern.

Also, Vanguarde recently announced an intention to create a black Vanity Fair. Again, I had said to friends for years that a black Vanity Fair could work. Again, you want to get an idea about my media diet, add Vanity Fair and The New York Observer to the list outlined in my earlier post. It's all well researched gossip.

In an article about Urbanexpose.com, a Web site that
critiques prominent urban Web portals, Inside described an
encounter with "Crispus Attucks," who identified himself as
one of the people who operates Urbanexpose. Inside also
reported that McLean Greaves, a former executive with
Volume.com, was "Crispus Attucks."

After reviewing available material and extensively
interviewing Mr. Greaves, Inside has come to the conclusion
that Greaves is not "Crispus Attucks" and has no involvement
with Urbanexpose.com. We regret this error and apologize to
Mr. Greaves.

To Artisha...

YOU SAY: Ahh the most trafficed site on the web is Yahoo. Have you ever looked at its design? Of course not because there is none.

BUT I SAY: Though simplistic, yahoo does have a design and it is CONSISTENT throughought the site (with few exceptions), whether you are on the search page, playing games, or participating in fantasy soprts. They are all pretty BASIC webpages, white background, YAHOO! logo, usually a personalize option, help, and a banner ad. No the pages are not made from a template or anything, but cover the logo on a YAHOO! site and I can still tell where I am.

YOU SAY: Just because tech can do something doesnt mean the tech SHOULD do something.

I SAY: I agree. I never stated or implied otherwise.

YOU SAY: You unfortunately have the same ignorant mind set as many of the urban executives out there, who get impressed by flash movies and DHTML sites

I SAY: You only know things about me that I let you know by posting here. You have no idea what impresses me, or not. You seem real upset at my last post and I am not sure why. I was about to use some explitives here and talk about yo mamma in response to your personal attack at me, but Dr. Thulsa Doom, et. al, asked me to cut that shizznit out. But if you like, read the insults I said about the Jamaican w/ the Canadian passport and pick one for yourself.

As for urban execs getting a woody about flash and dhtml, they are not the only ones. Nonurban execs fall prey to the same, "mine should be bigger, better, than..." mentality.

Fact is flash and DHTML and XML and JAVA are all cool and appropriate technologies to use on a website. However, they should be used only to enhance the user's experience and should be published along side low bandwidth alternatives for those of you who still connected at 56K or less. Online, technology should be temperred with mercy for low bandwitdh and outdated - desparate browsers.

YOU SAY: ...that noone visits more then once since it crashes most browsers and is a nightmare on the eyes.

I SAY: Stickiness in this urban online space will be determined by CONTENT not technology (or lack there of). Even worse than having a site that most people can only view from their office is having a site that rarely (if ever) updates its content or the content is not worth revisiting. Back to your example of YAHOO! their design may be simple, but they have content out the ass. I visit it several times a day for a variety of reasons.

YOU SAY: KISS Keep it simple silly

I SAY: stop w/ the personal attacks on me or can KISS my @ss!! You should change your email address to:
ArtknowslessthanBCool@blackplanet.com

MY COMMENTS ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THIS SITE were not to slam its simplistic design. I was simply alluding to the fact that:

1. Sometimes hyper links may go unnoticed on this page because there (sometimes) is nothing to distiguish them from the rest of the text.

2. That many people that come to this site may never see the "under the fold" links to ABOUT, PRIVACY, PRESS and TECHNOLOGY.

3.NEWSARCHIEVESACCOUNTS should not look like one word.

These comments about UE are based standard webpage design principals that would IMPROVE the asthetic value and user experience. I never said that should use FLIZZASH!! So get off of my nutz!

I think Soulpurpose's new attempt at making online hot shit "Soulpoopoo" will not be long lived. If they think that Soulpoopoo will attract anyone but children that like funny little names. They are mistaken. I think it is time for someone to really invest some time in writing good solid pieces. I also heard that Han Soul is really a creative genius. I haven't heard anything from him in awhile, but that one song he had was a legitimate hit. Without Han Soul, Soulpurpose will find itself like that famous soul food pig's feet...pickled. I'm not sure anyone really considers SoulPurpose.com to be a "news source",
it's more or less just an attempt at news digestion for urban entertaiment types,
who probably would benefit having things fed to them, as opposed to scouring through a variety of
newswires. Like most urban entertainment newsletters, the news is mostly late. It's rare that EUR doesn't tell you
something you haven't already heard. FNV is the same way. Personally, I feel SoulPurpose could do away with the "NewsBytes" and focus on
publishing more analysis, summary, and comment. Everyone should leave news to the AP and Reuters. SoulPurpose should do a better job cultivating the
e-mail subscriber base and really have the site support it.

Whether or not this will make money remains to be seen, but hey why not try?

They really need an archive, there were a few articles i did enjoy, but you are only allowed to access the current week's articles.

SoulPurpose really sucks, but they still might be redeemable.

Point #1: Your WRONG about the site design her not being hot. It is HOT and the reason its hot is because it doenst do al the silly flash things you seem to like so much.
Point #2: Flash and DHTML by any standards are wasted except on sites where hte end user expereince is controlled. None of hte urban sites that that level of control and so its wasted.
Point #3: UBO keeps laying off people and with every layoff more of their internal information becomes fodder for this site. I think it makes perfect sense for the site to post this documents long or not.
Point #4: If folks didnt pick up the clue that there was something to click in the doc then they really dont need to be online or on this site. I think this site is aimed at a higher end user then you are talking about.

They sure do have a lot of snappy one-liners over at Vanguarde:
"UrbanIQ is the Black Forrester"
"Savoy is the Black Vanity Fair"
"Impact is the Black Billboard"
All this sounds good and all, but right now not one of the Vanguarde sites are really impressive. Impact is nothing more then a long flash intro, UrbanIQ is cant possibly fool anyone into buying its "research" and Savoy is VIBE 5 years older and 5 years to late. I dont want to be harsh but I just cant see taking information on "Best Practices for Tech Deals" from UrbanIQ instead of say Jupiter or Kagan. Again you personally attack me when my comments had nothing to do with you (and you call me childish). I merely pointed out ways to improve the sight. This design of this sight is not beyond reproach. I wonder why you insist on defending it so much.

To address your last post aimed at me:

Point 1 &2 : This sight is HOT, but there is room for improvement. (not to be misconstrude by you as meaning add bells and whistles, ie. Flash) My last post, listing ways it could be better have nothing to do with Flash or DHTML. I merely stated that those technologies are good to use WHEN THEY ENHANCE THE USER'S EXPERIENCE. So again, get off me!

Point 3: I agree that it was a good thing to post the document on this sight. I don't see where in what I wrote before that I said it was the contrary. I had no objection to the size, which your note implies.

Point 4: If you really think that this sight is aimed at a higher end user, than this should blow away your own argument to keep it simple and low tech. If this sight is indeed geared toward more sophisticated netizens than a tech infusion would be appropriate here.

I do not feel that this sight is geared toward a more sophisticated user. It's geared toward anyone interested in urban new media. AND... judgeing by what passes (or not) these days as urban new media -- sophisticated it is not, nor is their average visitor.

If someone did not pick up a doc link on a page that has no visible clues as to such, then it is the fault of the designer - not the user. This point, we may disagree, but that does not give you the right to verbally assault me, misdirect my comments, nor diss anyone who did not see that the link was there.

Point 5: I am happy that you are secure in your own right to have the freedom to post under your real identity. Whatever works for you.... but that does not give you anymore clout than anyone else on here posting under a fugazi name, myself included. We just ain't as free as you are. That point has been echoed on this sight numerous times before -- without anonymous posters, there would be no sight.

And for the record, I don't curse at people like a child on this sight - anymore. ;0) I was temporarily afFLicted with a Ricketts Disease.

BUT - If I am so childish and unsophisticated as you point out, then why do you follow the links I regularly post here that lead to information related to whatever is being discussed, (like the bio of mrs bamflex, colateral info on who AIN'T behind this sight, the fff, Noritalf, etc.) and then comment on them?

It is you that needs to grow thicker skin. Judgeing by the numerous typoes on your last attempt to diss me you were obviously fevorishly typing, upset about what I said -- even though I made no attempt to diss you. And in your fevorish attempt to get one up on me, you did not stop the read (and more importantly UNDERSTAND) what I said.

Regardless of your opinion of my "hiding behind B Cool" - "attempt(ing) to comment on an industry that" (I) "apparently know little about" self... I stand behind my record on this bb, and my personal experience as an urban, African American, HipHop loving (since 1986), net head who's worked in and around the web since 1994. But enough about the cool man behind B Cool - that ain't the point. I will just agree to disagree with you and hereby call this subthread (btw. me and you about the design of this sight) dead.

Respond if you like - but it really doesn't matter. You Trick! (sorry - I could not resist)

B Cool has a point. The presentation of UE needs some work. BUT, unlike most of the sites out there, the content is great-except for the all of the typos and poor grammar in the articles.

UBO needs to put some content into their site rather than going off on to other ventures. Personally, I think UBO has some great ideas. They just need to stick to a plan, finish it, and then go expand their online "community".

Can you or anybody at UBO challenge the information that was posted above about where you work and its a BIG SCAM?

that UBO is a Company Shell. Meaning that the company is being backed by investors, and it's intention is fluff. (i.e like in the movie BOILER ROOM)..... To sell it to an investor for much more money than it's worth....

In regards to your misinformed dis on Vanguarde - you think you might want to wait until Savoy actually launches before you start spewing complete ignorance as to its content and likeless to Vibe? You are sadly and pathetically misdirected and misinformed if you think that's what it is.

UBO are a bunch of losers. And they give black people a bad name. Tho' white people like that big British fag who chases after his queenies in latinflava run the "company," most people think it's a black company. UBO has always been shit. Look at their name. Biting off of HBO. That right there should have let everyone know that this company wasn't gonna be shit. And for the company to put Jame sAndrews in charge, when some people said he was fired from his last few jobs at Ecko, and Sony (after bootlegging Nas' album) says it all. How do people feel about James bootlegging Nas album? A claim I heard on the telephone from Adam Matthews. Let me know. And let me know what y'all feel about UBO and the big British guy who took George Jackson's company and is uisng it to finance his high living white folk ways.

Like I said in my earlier post, I'm in wait and see mode with Vanguarde.

Anyway, I posted this in another thread, but I though you all would be interested in this quote the I got from one of my many e-mail newsletters (self-described "haters" herein, should check for Mr. Wasow's name):

"Is content king...or simply the means to the end? Conference-goers ponder content strategies for Web sites:

Is Web strategy all about content, or is content the means to the end? Those were the conflicting views put forth by the best in the online content biz at Screaming Media's 2000 "MalContent" conference (small "c" for conference, to convey extra attitude, thank you very much).

For Omar Wasow, executive director of Blackplanet.com, content is only the tool with which dot-coms, be they for-profit or not, build community (ie. connection) with customers/users. "The Web fundamentally is about communication and interaction between people, and content is a subset of that. That is not a subset of content," Wasow said. Wasow, by the way, knows whereof he speak: his site scored some 77 million page views in February, more than any other site targeted at African Americans."

Ad Delivery Network

As far as the UBO-AKA connection is concerned, it seems as though AKA has dug a big hole for themselves. They made big promises to sites once they teamed up UBO to serve the ads on the AKA affiliated sites, but then UBO only sold a small portion of the inventory. As of now, AKA sites are serving all UBO network ads. UBO sure ain't paying for this advertising!

UBO is getting free ad space on AKA sites. AKA will not deliver on the money promises to their affiliates, and the sites will get screwed. Seems like AKA is getting ready to file for bankruptcy and UBO is just riding a wave of free advertising. What the hell they are advertising anyway (as previously reported they already missed the boat on the Williams' sisters site), I have no clue. Although, Heather Hunter as some sort of XXX action hero is a wonderful blend of naughty and disturbing.

Too bad when it comes down to it, these sites that unwittingly handed over their inventory to AKA, will never see a dime of what they are owed. I hope I am wrong. What do y'all think?

Sorry to get off the subject BUT there is too much talent around here to not try and tap into it.

I'm looking for constructive ideas and partners to help me reshape my site, BLACKMUSIC.COM into a strong urban destination.

I hope to begin reviving the site in the next few weeks.

I heard about UBO at the office and I went to one of the launch parties. The site looks good but I didn't stay there long. I realized it didn't have exactly what I was looking for. I want up to the minute info. I need to know the Hip-hop hot spots in the city right now.

Does anyone know what sites to check?

Hey There Fuck Face!

The latest UBO redesign is a bit better than what they had before (but the navigation is still a bit of a mess). If they want it to scale they should stop using Cold Fusion and get something a bit more professional. Of course if they aren't worried about the site getting any traffic - then it's nothing to worry about.

The e-commerce stab isn't a bad idea, but if they don't have the correct backend systems in place - then they should get ready to burn more cash. I'm not sure what they are going to sell - with Napster nobody pays for music now.

This is my first post on UE.

I like this UE. It has all the passion and flavor of fuckedcompany and slashdot. Don't add shit too it. Stick with the slashdot / weblog format.

On UBO
Asside from the internal politics, the concept of multiple targeted 18-34 channels is viable and has the opportunity for success. Unfortunately, the choices of some of the channels are...interesting.

Since the discussion seems to be centered around Soulpurpose.com, I will throw my $1.911.

It is a good concept, but there is no way they are going to stay up-to-date.

Too many categories. They should have focused on online media and technology--oops too late.
