360hiphop gets played out of position; Sneak preview for the competition.

360hiphop.com plans to launch today at 6:30pm with their hip-hop destination site. It will take a lot for them to meet this deadline. The site is visually pleasing, which as it should be, because it was done by Kioken. We have seen the whole site, but we will share some screenshots with you.
Kioken is a design firm that is known for flashy sites that cannot be used on a daily basis and are a nightmare to update and maintain. Their signature mark is loud colors, conflicting technologies, frame based content, little tiny graphics and text that you have to strain to see on exotic backgrounds. This looks great to VP's who have little net experience and never look at the sites they are supposed to be developing, marketing, and managing. Just when you thought Y2G was a nightmare to navigate, here comes 360hiphop.com.
This site also attempts to use every technology just because it's there. Sometimes less is more. The main navigation is a complex meld of java, flash and DHTML. The site also uses Shockwave, QuickTime, Real Player and IPIX. This is a big demand on processors and bandwidth. Don't except to see this site on your WAP enabled phones or palm 7's
A big mistake by a lot of pure-web play sites is a lack of understanding the perils of using an outside development house. The cost of running a site can spiral out of control rapidly as you become a slave to the development houses whims. When they get a contract bigger than you, they'll ignore your pleas for immediate help to fix even the smallest problem. Even a fixing a typo or adjusting a little graphic is billable hours for them. Another mistake is letting them decide what your strategy for content delivery will be. Without key management in this position, or a third-party consultant to help guide you through this process, you could be asking for a costly redesign at some point, shortly after launch. They will design what best interests them and makes their portfolio look good. This is similar to letting the guy who designs your album covers at a record label, tell you how to distribute your records and how you should cut down the length of that next single.
One mitigating factor is that Volume.com has also gone with Kioken, which should be interesting to see the results. Peter Kang can buy more nice suits with the cash he beat out of these guys. If you thought Oven Digital was bad at customer support and site maintenance once they got paid, wait till you see what Kioken does. Kioken is sort of like Jacob Arabo, pimping the urban set for websites instead of ice.

I feel bad for 360. I wanted to believe that none of the urban sites would stoop so low as to be responsible for a reprehensible site. I wanted to say it was white people, the man or the Klan, but it is becoming apparent that 360 it the Wizard behind the curtain. This site mysteriously surfacing 5 days before 360's launch? Russell's story being on the top of the page? The very first comment conveniently being one that would incite a riot? And Conveniently being against Russell/360? Shame on you 360hiphop. More Doom & Gloom
For Dot-Coms
Netzee, Bluefly, CDNOW and Streamline.com, as well as drkoop.com, are among the 12 Internet companies that stand to burn through their cash in the coming months, according to an article entitled "Up In Smoke," in the June 19 issue of Barron's.
Claimsnet.com, Pilot Network Services, U.S. Search.com, Netivation.com, Mortgage.com and PlanetRx.com are the other companies on Barron's list.
In the article, Barron's updated its original 207-company study from its March 20 article "Burning Up," for this year's first quarter.
The article said more than 60 companies are still faced with the prospect of running out of cash in the next 12 months.

Actually, Volume hasn't gone with Kioken at all! Kioken did some work for Volume back in fall of last year, but the Volume folks quickly bagged Kioken's ass and fired them before the project was over. Peter Kang (of the nice suits) was leading the team that got dusted. Reasons for the abrupt firing are pretty obvious if you read UrbanExpose's on-point description of Kioken's tactics. You can fool some of the people some of the time, with that overpriced shit!
Kioken being folks of principle, immediately went over and replicated the SAME DESIGN they had created for Volume for Puffy's web-site. All this in violation of any non-compete agreement that the Volume cats may have done (and this being an HBO funded venture you bet they did, HBO's mad paranoid on that stuff on all their non-Internet deals). HBO should have sued Kioken's ass, but anyway...
And now, designing the sites for 360HipHop-- you can bet all the concept sketches, area titles, all of that shit they sucked out of Volume, some of that wormed into 360hiphop.
Check out the STANDARD piece on 360 ("Designers Republic" or something..), where Kioken says "We know what to do, get out of our way" (not exact quote). Yes, cool tatoos, bleached Asian hair and giant HDTV screens are a susbtitute for real substance. But for how long????

everyone, but no one is recognizing that while we're pulling each
other down, and spreading ourselves thin -- the suits at MTV are
