This site is gorgeous! This big window pops up! Too bad the pop-up window eliminates any chance of you gauging if the page is fully loaded or not. It's going to take a lot of money to maintain this site. The site features four main areas: Music, Culture, Lifestyle, and Politics. It has those clearly labeled at the top in flash. It has a redundant navigation on the side for the same areas in html and flat graphics that have small touts to what content is contained in that section. A java ticker at the bottom has links to other stories. The bottom navigation includes special area: broadcast, interactive, commerce, my360
All the navigation competes with each other.
This page features lots of links to tiny 100x100 real video clips of snoop dog looking into the camera and bullshiting. It looks like a BCAT show. It also has a tiny frame in there with something written by Kris Ex. They pay people to write this? Just show me the damn clip.
This is a multimedia presentation in shockwave and QuickTime on a political issue. This cost a lot of money, let's get that e-commerce and fulfillment deals in place!
This is kioken fuckery at it's worst. Squeezing the registration form into this little tiny frame. This perhaps is one of your greatest assets hidden away. Registered users who say, "Yes!, Please send me promotional materials via email with links leading back to your site and your partners' sites and include me in the statistical data that you need to secure premium advertising and sponsorships.
Rakim! You can't say anything bad about him! Too bad inane polls take up real estate. They don't speak to the user. You don't always have to speak down to the user. The ubiquitous banner ad is up top to help pay all those Kioken bills.
Another palette swap, to let you know you're in a different area. This is the lifestyles section. It features 3D views of people on the beach in a feature called "sex on a beach". You can also see Kelis test drive a 2000 Hummer.
This section is about culture. The usual shit; Craig G was underrated, graffiti is dying but alive in a new form, and some alternative band you never heard of might appeal to you.
This is the broadcast section. In case there wasn't enough little tiny fuzzy video clips in the main area. There are a few more here. Ironically there are more in the music area than there are in the broadcast section. It also features annoying sounds and a flash navigation to reach real video clips. It features the familiar metaphor of a television. You can find a flash cartoon of Russell Simmons in the lab. Yawn.
This is the Interactive Izone section. It features a Dreamcast controller like you'll be playing anything remotely as fun as DOA2. There are little tiny buttons here that are really hard to click on. It features such time-wasting classics such as: What's the word, Lyrical Graffiti, Uncut Raw, Cyber-Cypher, and Human Beatbox. They also stuffed chat and message boards in here. There also is a timely poll asking which one of these games you like. Kioken dammit! You've done it again!

Odviously 360hiphop.comhasit's workcutout for them. I know that they are using Vingette astheir content management tool. however their site has nothing new. It will be interesting to see how they will try to make themselves different in the digital hip-hop space. They have a ton of other hip-hop sites to compete with.
http://www.kioken.com/ is a NY based award-winning design firm. however their sites are very heavy on design and not thought out for the low-end user. The are responsible for the EVIL site that is called BadBoyOnline.com and Puffdaddy.com |
I've als heard that Kioken will be redesigning the hookt.com site, sinec overdigital is no longer involved in the project. So that makes kioken the only design firm to be involved in three of the 10 million urban portals, Volume.com, Hookt.com and 360hiphop.com. I hope they are at least african0-american or have some high level african-american executives. I hear that they charged 2.8 million to redeign the hookt.com site

OK. I'm starting to wonder if someone over at 360 is not behind this urbanexpose business. I'm digging your site, as one of my friend's has said, "it is the hate that hate produced." A little like Star and Buc Wild on Hot 97 in the am.
Anyway, 360 continues to receive top billing---at least on the occasions I have peeped urbanexpose---and you have mad inside information. I recently wrote an article on 360 for digitalmusicweekly.com, but I didn't get anything so detailed.
I mean, I had a demo. But no one offered screen shots. This definitely sounds like some inside promo/marketing scheme.
Anyway, I think 360 will be able to hold it down, and you can read my article on digitalmusicweekly to see why. If Simmons can leverage his connects appropriately it will all be aiigght.
As for all the eyecandy, I'm just curious about the avearge 56k user. But Simmons and Hinds says everything has been tested for them. We'll see. As we'll see if creativity and content can hold folks' mindshare for long. |

Urban Exposé Exposes

So, just who are the founders behind Urban Exposé (www.urbanexpose.com), the ambitious site that’s got everyone’s panties in a bind? That’s been the question on everyone’s lips over the past couple of days. Why? The site has already created a hype that’s hard to ignore. It launched last week with no fan fare and no advertising and has already attracted roughly 1,000-2,000 unique visitors. Inquiring minds discovered through networksolutions.com that Urban Exposé was registered to 44 Wall Street. A report stated that three companies previously or currently reside at this address, leading to speculation that one of them may be involved. They are: Vanguarde Media (don’t even think about it, we’re too busy writing this sh*t until 2 in the morning), Hookt.com, and Rise Media. Impact247.com found the list for former residents to be longer, including Iced Media, Trendsetterz, ByStorm Entertainment, and Sayshe.com.
Does this list provide a clue? Today, the site even gave a sneak preview to the 360hiphop.com site, which isn’t set to launch until 6:30 pm today. The site explained that Kioken, the design firm used for 360, is “known for flashy sites that cannot be used on a daily basis and are a nightmare to update and maintain. Their signature mark is loud colors, conflicting technologies, frame based content, little tiny graphics and text that you have to strain to see on exotic backgrounds,” a statement that clearly denotes the technical background a source close to the site says is prevalent among the minds behind Urban Exposé.
“The people who are doing this site are undoubtedly not UBO or Hookt.com because they know a lot about the Internet,” jibed the source.
Their success has apparently piqued the interest of financiers and other Internet companies who may seek to partner with the site, or buy it out. “Three people want to buy or partner with the site,” a source reported. “One of which is The Industry Standard, and the other two are venture capital firms.”
Another site that mirrors Urban Exposé’s popularity is Fucked Company (www.fuckedcompany.com), a parody of Fast Company, which, like Urban Expose, doesn’t have advertising. So how do these shock-value, community-driven sites make money?
NeChe Harris, project director at advertising firm Bates USA believes advertising options for these sites can go either way. “There are more web sites than advertising, therefore, the advertising dollars are scarce for everyone. There might not be any advertisers or sponsors who want to attach their brand to these types of sites. [But] it depends on content of site and the number of visitors… Some advertisers look at shock value, like if Howard Stern was a site. There are people who realize that their target appreciates Howard Stern-esque [sites]. Their consumers actually look for that sort of thing. If you listen to Howard Stern you find a lot of ads for beer, really guy, machismo stuff.”
So if you wish the creators of Urban Exposé would choke on their own content, just remember that you’re creating their most valuable asset--the message boards, so either stop writing or get over it because it doesn’t look like they’ll be going anywhere for awhile |

You beat me to it, Lal. I just cut and pasted all that jibberish to do just that. That's only on my Mac's Netscape, though. On IE, I get one step farther, with six options to pick from ("training missions"). Too bad I can't click on any of them. Must not be Mac-ready, even with a T1. On both I still have to reload the start page to get it to load at all. Let me tell you...going through all that spacebabble everytime is pretty annoying. I'll give it another shot...but then I'll go back to the simple sites. Hell, even waiting for hookt to load is usually too much for me.

I tried to access the site as well. Wasn't able to get past the first page which told me about the training that I would undergo. Alas no training, just gibberish. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who had problems. Hopefully they will get the kinks straightened out very soon.

Now that’s something to hate, instead of some people I don’t even know. I don’t trust computers. I always think that somehow the government can see what I’m doing or what my friends are emailing me. Not that my emails are that weird, only little chain letter notes that my grandmother sends from New Orleans because she’s bored sitting in her house with no air conditioning. Aren’t grandmother’s funny that way? Just sending email after email like all I have to do with my time is sit at my computer and wait for downloads and responses from the ten people who sent me a junk chain letter or something.
